Does anyone have a Benchmade 834 Ascent II? I have one I use for EDC. It has pluses and minuses compared to similar Spyderco:
Pluses: Tip up or tip down carry. Adjustable pivot screw. The clip side of the handle is smooth so it doesn't wear my pocket. Made in USA!
Minuses: Oval hole. Price.
I like this knife. It's just the right size (3.4" blade), fits my hand, nice and light, and holds a good edge (154CM). Does anyone have this knife and/or an opinion?

I have one and it's hard to open. The way it's designed makes it a real b*tch to open. The 154CM blade is the best in my collection and it feels great in the hand. But it takes awhile to get used to. When I was handling it at the store I cut my thumb as I was trying to open it,the serrations made it bleed like crazy all over the floor. I was impressed by it's cutting abilities so I bought it.

I think it's the oval hole that makes it hard to open. Mine has a plain edge and hasn't bit me yet.

Yeah it would be perfect if it had grip like a Gerber Gator and a circular hole.

I have one of the original Ascents (smaller one) that I use every day at work. Considering I work in a furniture warehouse, I cut any number of things with it. It comes back every time for more. It has ATS-34 steel instead of the 154CM, but I still can't complain. I've dropped it numerous times onto the concrete floors to no ill effects. I did have to do a bit of work on the tip one time though. Through all that, I can't say enough good about it. For the price, it can't be beat, especially since I bought it on clearance for like $30. :D

BTW, I have a thumb stud on mine, not the hole. I dislike the oval holes, and downright HATE the round "sypdie" holes. Thumb studs all the way for me.

I have the small thumb-studded Ascent and it's a pretty decent little knife. The thing that I don't like is that the ergos on the small models suck. I can't figure out how to fit my hand on the thing.

I know am way out of date on this, but although I've owned an 834 for years and I'd buy two again if I could I've only recently discovered this forum. In my hobbies (sailing and the local voluntary firebrigade) this have proved to be the best knife I could wish for. It opens readily, always cuts what it's supposed to and it has never let me down. Anyone, with a good 834 for sale?

Try posting in the Exchange forum, in the WTB (Want To Buy) section. You may have better luck there.
Otherwise, yes, the 834 is quite a nice one. I also with they hadn't been discontinued.
