Benchmade Axis Springs - Interchangable from one knife to another?

I have a BM 530 Pardue that someone just sold me and, to my surprise, one of the Axis springs is toast. I don't want to send it back to BM and have to wait 3 weeks for them to fix it. Do all the models use the same spring, or are they different? I have an old 705 McHenry Williams and was thinking I'd pull a spring out of that if it would fit in the 530.

Thanks for any replies.

No they are not all the same size. Some of the smaller knives use smaller omega springs than what come in the bigger knives. The 530 and 705 are about the same width from what I remember so you might get lucky and it fit. If the springs are a little different it might not work real well because if one is stronger than the other it loads the lock bar unevenly and can cause some vertical play. If the springs are a little different but it will fit then if you replace both springs you can get around that problem.

Just make sure that the new spring is not different enough where it gets bound or pinched because this will make the spring break really quick if it can't move freely.

I never had this problem, but I heard someone say that they, in fact, are same size. The only model line that used smaller spring size was 77x series. It doesn't hurt to try one way or another :)

Thanks everyone. Got an answer from someone who is definitely in a position to know. They are all the same.

Who did you get the info from? And did they say they are the same between the 705 and the 530 or that all omega springs are the same size? Because I am holding the spring from a 950 and one from a 707 and they are definitely different sizes.

Are they different size or different thickness?

Both. I don't have my micrometer right now but I measured the one from the 950 at 0.025" previously. I would say the smaller one is probably more like 0.020ish. Not a huge difference but definitely a little smaller. I'm not sure the larger wire would even fit into the hole in the 707 liner.

Edit: I found my micrometer and the 707 measures at 0.0215" while the 950 is 0.0250"

Grab some piano wire and make your own. Easy to do with a set of needle nose. The piano wire will last a life time and gives a better lock up depending on which ones you use.

Thanks. Maybe they did change something since the Rift was released, but there was a discussion on this over at BM forum about 1.5-2 years ago and everyone was saying that the spring size was the same for all AXIS lock knives, except for 77x's. I'll check it out tomorrow :)

I wouldn't use piano wire. It would rust even faster than the stock springs. Each knife has a right and left spring. It's not much of a deal to change them, but I don't know if Benchmade will make them available to do-it-your-selfers. I have never broken an Omega spring, but have cleaned the suface rust off of many.

Concur. Either the post above needs to be clarified or it's just wrong.
