Considering the purchase of a Benchmade Bailout Tanto Gray Cerakote M4 Green Aluminum Axis Lock just for personal protection during full day solo hiking trips.
The lighter weight and M4 blade are what attracted my attention. Any personal experiences and honest opinions would be appreciated.

I have one, I like it. It's certainly thin and light, if that's your main requirement. That said, if it were me and for protection, I'd be carrying a larger fixed blade. Let me know if you have any specific questions, happy to do my best to answer.

What are you personally protecting against?

A stout walking stick will be exponentially more effective against just about anything or anyone, unless you expect to be grappled by someone much larger and want to cut your way out of their grasp. But for pumas, cobras, baboons and meth heads, you are better with a long strong stick. Bring the knife for actual cutting purposes, which will be likely if you end up in any non-melee survival situations.

First off the Bailout would not be a good weapon. That being said. The last thing you would want to do in a fight is use lethal force. You would end up in jail for years. Better of getting hit. Best thing to do would be go the other way fast as you can. Been in a lot fights growing up. Never even thought of using a weapon. If you are really that concerned take self defense course and carry a stick. Here is a pick of my Blackjack 7. Vietnam Era (tool).

Who or what do you want to protect yourself from ?
What training are you going to take ?
Ask anyone with military experience ..........when you are at the point of fighting with a knife, you are in serious trouble.
I have BM Bailout and it is a great EDC knife. For light use camping it would good.
Last thought, some of the most highly trained people in fighting with or with out weapons are experts in avoiding danger.

The Bugout and Bailout are phenomenal for hiking. They don't weigh anything and don't take up any space.

The Bailout model you are looking at is made of good stuff by a good company. It will likely last you a lifetime of solo hikes.

Take it for the "cutting tool" aspect instead of the "protecting tool".
