Well,I should soon have my Benchmade BM45s balisong soon (Yippee!!) but i'd like to ask all you folks out there, what is it about these knives that seems to cause so much facination.Ive also heard some comments like"the best folding knife ever made" and "the best production knife ever made".what do you guys think??

THINK TWICE..CUT ONCE!

I own a Bear MGC tanto and a BM35S and I can honestly say that there is no comparison. The BM is rock solid. The skeletonized handles provide a good grip and they snap together with authority.

There's something about the sound of a Balisong in operation that is relaxing.

I think that because they are out of production people are paying too much; almost 2.5 times original retail.
I'm waiting to see what the new BM 42 Balisongs are like. The retail will be $160
so they should sell for around $120.
4.2 inch Weehawk blade
Titanium handles
Latch gate feature
screw assembly
interchangable blades

The balisong, in genral, is a really good knife. the blade stays still, as long as you aren't a real sissy.

the way the handle(s) squeeze together holding the blade still is great. the only problem is when you get one make of cheap parts, you can't use it much without putting dents in the hanlde, which after long enough, destroys the former solidness.

the benchmade that I had (but lost) did very well in that department, it had small dents, but nowhere near enough to decrease the blade's sturdyness.

in addition to the mechanics- all that boring stuff, it is beautiful. the sight of a good balisong manipulator is amaising. The 1st time I saw someone with a butterfly knife, I was stunned by the smoothness of how it looked and how it sounded.

other than that, they suck!!

If you'll search the history here at bladeforums, you'll find a thread from a few months ago asking "What is the Ultimate Lock?" The conclusion was that the balisong is the ultimate lock. Lock failure, which has been demonstrated on every other type of lock ever made including the Axis and other "rolling lock" designs, are unheard of short of the solid steel handles literally breaking.

So, what's so great about the BM45? Well, the quality is world-class on every one. The pins are joins are so wonderfully made that the knife moves like silk. The Weehawk blade profile is, IMHO, the best ballance for a balisong (though some argue for the Tanto in the BM44).

So, the BM45 is the best production example of the best knife design. That would make it the best production folding knife ever made, IMHO.

Now, if you'll search the history here you'll also find many threads about "what is the best knife?" The answer is that there is no answer. It's like asking "what's the best production car?" Twin Turbo 300ZX? Well, that's a great car, sure, very fast and great handling, but I've got a big pile of wood chips I need to move and that "trunk" looks pretty small. So, how about a big Dodge Ram with the big diesel with the extended bed and extended cab? Now there's a truck! But, while that extended cab is big, I've got a church youth group to pick up and they really can't ride in the bed. How about one of those new Ford Expeditions then? Yeah, it's huge, but for me to just commute around town in, it sure burns gas. So, how about a Chevy Sprint? Well, it certainly stretches the gas budget, but it can't get up hills very well. You see, there is no one perfect car for every task.

The Bali-Song is great folding knife design and they're fun to play with. The BM45 is a great knife no matter how you look at it. When awards are made for the best quality production knife, the BM45 has got to be a strong contender if not winner.

How could you NOT be totally hypnotized by a fast, smooth moving Bali.

Even after all these years I'm still fascinated when I watch people play with them.

Balisongs in general:
I think the thing that appeals to me MOST about the design, is the symmetry. the handle feels the same open as closed, upside-down as right-side up. Which to me, leads to "true" ambidexterity.

I also love the fact that you can quickly open them in any position.
~ POP a Latch drop for a quick Ice-pick grip (downward stab)
~ A simple Windmill (my term) SNAPS in just as quickly for a forward grip (forward thrust).

And it's also great that the movement of the openings coincide with the various angles of attack.
~ A basic Horizontal opening leads perfectly into an "outside to inside" slash.
~ The aforementioned Windmill motion continues through for a forward stab, without ever having to stop the motion.

45S specific:
How can you fault something thats made so well? I have 2 of them, and from the pressure fitted pins, to the solid feel of the handles, these babies are made to perform. Compare them to any other Balis out there.......... NO contest!

is the blade interchangeable?

According to BEnchmadfe, the blades are interchangable but if you do it yourself it voids the warranty. the screws are there mainly to help the BM repair crews.
