Does anyone know if I can order one from 1SKS if I live in California? I know it is illegal to sell one in CA, or carry one, but the law does not say anything about owning balisong knife...

Rival, You are asking in a public forum if a knife dealer will ship you a knife that is illegal in the state in which you reside. You also are advertising in a public forum that you wish to aquire a knife that is illegal to own in your state. A better idea would be to just order the knife from the dealer of your choice and see what happens. They will tell you if they do not ship to your state. Most dealers post on their site a list of states that they do not ship to. I thought that everything is illegal in Kalifornia. ;)

You are wrong. This type of knife is NOT illegal to own. I can hang few hundred butterfly knives all over my apartment walls, and if the cop comes in - no problem. As long as I am not selling or giving them away it is OK to have them. It is also illegal to carry one around, or have one handy in the car, though it is OK to have one in the trunk... Check here for the legal explanation.

Why don't you ask them? ;) :p

Seriously though, most knife sellers have a policy of "buyer must be aware of laws in his locality. Seller not responsible." Or something to that effect, which basically means they won't say anything if you won't. :)

I live in CA and have a BM bali I bought online (though I forget where), as well as a MT UT D/E.

I have a couple cheapo crap balis that I brought in from Greece too...

Guys, we're talking knives here, not fully-automatic firearms. The latter the .gov cares about, not the former. What I mean is, talk about illegal things where firearms are concerned, and you can expect some trouble.

Do the same with knives, and it just isn't that big a deal.

As an interesting aside, no crime has ever been committed by a civilian with a legally-owned fully-automatic firearm.

The only crime committed (there may be one more for a total of two) with a legally-owned fully-automatic weapon was committed by a police officer.

More people have been killed with knives (probably even automatic knives and balis) than with full-auto firearms.

Neat little factoid, not that it matters to the gun-grabbers...

im pretty sure this has been discussed before and i dont' want to post specific dealers that would ship to CA but you can PM me and i will recommend some places

Everything is illegal in NY.
Way wrong GB. Aside from autos, true gravity knives, and ballistic knives, any other edged tool is legal to purchase, sell, and own. Carry of double edge blades is prohibited statewide, carry of knives with blades over 4" prohibited in NYC, making some of the larger balis unsuitable for carry there. NYC also says knives under the 4" limit must be carried concealed. Aside from that, zero tolerance on school grounds, and "house rules" in many public and some private buildings and attractions, it's really pretty wide open here. Get caught with any otherwise legal knife while commiting a crime, or giving the impression you are about to, and it "might" be ruled a "dangerous knife", but that's not a restriction on knives, its a restriction on criminal behavior.

There are some misconceptions here. California law governs Californians, not people in other states. 1SKS is in Kentucky and isn't governed by California laws. There is no federal law governing interstate commerce in butterfly knives like there is for automatic knives so 1SKS can ship a butterfly anywhere they wish in the U.S.

It is illegal for a dealer in California to sell a butterfly knife. That's the way the law is written. It isn't illegal for a dealer in another state to sell a butterfly to a Californian unless it is prohibited in that dealer's state. My understanding is that the law in California does not prohibit ownership of butterflies. It prohibits carry. I see nothing in any law that would make it illegal-for a Californian to order and receive a butterfly from an out-of state-dealer - neither does my attorney, for that matter.

Some of the California city governments tried to intimidate out-of state-knife-dealers a few years ago in order to stop them from shipping butterflies to Californians. It was just an attempt at intimidation, though. It had no legal foundation. So if a dealer outside of California refuses to ship a butterfly to a Californian, it might be solidarity with the California law or it might be based on some other motivation. It isn't based on illegality, though. Take care.

Thanks for clearing this up Fred. Rival, I apologize, I was misinformed on the legal status of balisongs in California. Glad you can own one. Which one are you looking at?

I wish I had known that when I went to NY for the NY custom knife show in november.

I was paranoid as hell about carrying a knife while in town. There are cops everywhere, I'm not used to that obvious of a police presence.
