Since the discontinuation of all of the balisong line, with the exception of the new BM42, balisongs have become more popular than ever before.(in my opinion) With this in mind do you think Benchmade will reproduce any of their other balisongs?

In my opinion I think they could nock any future competition out of the water with the reintroducton of let's say ten of their previous balisongs.

What do you think?

I sure hope that BM will reproduce some of their balisongs of the past.

At least i can say that Les still believes in the elegance and simplicity of a balisong, and that the balisong is a great knife concept.

Tooling. That's the problem: tooling. It's very expensive.

The success of the 42 and the continued strong demand for it for getting on a year now certainly will encourage them to continue and expand their existing line of butterfly knives. But, I expect them to proceed cautiously.

I don't think that we'll see any reproductions of the old BM/PC's ever. Sure it would be nice, but I don't think it's likely. I think they are looking to improve...and Ti handles are just that. I don't, nor have I ever, owned a BM 45, 44, or a BM 30 series (though I have just started making my own steel handled bali!). But I think that Ti is more resiliant and won't be crushed by the tang pin as fast as a steel handle (and especially a brass one). Also, the blade steel is an improvement as I understand. The sandvick (I think that's the correct spelling) steel is more impact resistant than the G-2 steel, which is what I believe the 45's had...correct me if I'm wrong.

What I would like to see is the 42 in the original dimensions as the 45. With the light weight of the Ti, it would still feel light, but would feel more beefy. Also if they made the blade wider like the old ones as well. That's what I want to see. Of course that would mean that they would have to create a whole new set of molds for the handles...and I think that is very unlikely.

I would certainly like to see older styles being reproduced again. However, like said, there probably won't be any exact copies of older models. With new steels and materials, I doubt they would go back to materials such as brass, zamak, etc.

I am predicting all the newer balis from BM will have cast ti handles with a variety of blades. Its only a matter of when.

It would be nice if BM expanded their line to to once again produce an economy line. I mean most of us were "teethed" on $15 and $20 flea market balis to start, then upgrading to BM economy, then onto the serious production line, and finally, if we can manage it, the custom bali. Right now, we have cheapo crap, and high end balis. No middle ground for the newcomers to learn the real meaning behind why we demand better.
Why should the next generation of bali collectors/manipulators be denied the same expeirence.

Just my thoughts on it tho, what do I know.

So Jonathan, who do you propose starts making a middle of the road bali? Columbia River makes pretty good knives for the price, but they are all imported so that might mean you'd have the same pin problem like with the jags...unless they actually used better pins. Just my opinion, but I don't think that most companies would want to get involved in that kind of project unless they thought that they could actually compete with BM or could offer a product a little less quality than BM for a lot less (as in about half) of what BM is asking.
