Looking at my next knife purchase and I'm hoping you guys can give me some feedback on these two knives, other than standard specs of course. Any quality issues with either knife? Which one would you prefer in a self defense scenario? Is the Bedlam too heavy for EDC in your opinion?

I'm thinking the Bedlam would hold up better in the long term but the Matriarch 2 Wave model is just a sick blade.

Any info or insight will be greatly appreciated, thanks. :)

Spyderco Matriarch 2 w/ Emerson Wave

Benchmade 860 Bedlam

a gun. Between those two the matriarch, it's my understanding that the matriarch and civilian were designed to be effective in the hands of someone with minimal or no training. By the way, both will be excellent quality, and both are wicked knives.

HaHa the one I choose will be a backup to my firearm.

Ya'll are lucky not to live in the communist state of MD and are able to CCW.

I would go with the matriarch as well. More specifically for the wave, gross motor skill to deploy.

I've never owned a Matriarch and I do have a Bedlam. That being said, I see the Bedlam as a more practical knife that can be used for more than self defense although it's probably just as capable as the Spyderco in self defense (but I have no clue about self defense with a knife other than stab and slash at the threat).

Why I would chose the Bedlam:
-Steel pommel that could break glass.
-Probably better at stabbing (looks that way to me).
-You can use it for other purposes, not just self defense.
-Opens up by just holding on to the handle and flicking your wrist down and up.

Why I would chose the Matriarch:
-Unique and cool looking blade.
-Lightweight.
-Emerson Wave.
-Designed for self defense (even though I don't know how or what makes it better for self defense).

I'm not much into knife SD, but I'd choose the Bedlam without hesitation: Better construction, including the lock, MUCH more versatile, and a better weapon as well according to folks like Edwood7. Search the forum for some of his posts on the Bedlam. The Matriarch looks like a gimmick, especially the wave feature, with light-weight (flimsy) construction and a low-strength lock, few uses beyond slashing flesh and looking scary. Then again, looking scary may be all that is needed from it in an SD situation...

I have a matriarch ii and.a pair of bedlams, both the spydie and benchmade are excellent knives. The m ii is a specific use knife with it's funky blade shape but the bedlam can be used for some utility tasks so it's my preferred blade....

The bedlam is a big heavy knife though so that may be an issue for some where the m ii is endura sized and much thinner, lighter and carries smaller as a result.

I think the bedlam may have gotten discontinued... Id try the bedlam out first just because it may not be around much longer.

They are and seem to getting scarce at dealers, but do pop up on the Exchange from time to time.

It doesn't carry that bad for being as big and heavy it is. Plus it does a decent job at everyday tasks as well.

I'd go Bedlam or a real Emerson. Haven't used a Spydie with a wave, I'm sure they're nice but they just don't speak to me.

Interesting, if that is the case the Bedlam just went to the top of the list. The Matriarch might have to wait until Spring.
