As the title implies my BM 156 CSK has had a failure with the BILT (Bolted InLine Tang).

The pictures describe the problem better than I can, but I will try, I opened up the back of the knife and checked for rust, which there is a small amount and not enough to make me worry. When I got it open I noticed that the top part of the Nut retainer was stuck to the butt cap instead of being part of the tang.

Another strange thing is that the pieces (blade/tang+broken piece) are very magnetic and stick together with the kind of strength you get out of cheap ceramic magnets. Probably heat treated near a strong magnetic field?

Here is the way it comes made.

Here is what mine looks like.

Picture of the damaged edge, looks like a clean break, not folding or bending. Very strange, if I had to guess I would say that there was a flaw in the metal after being treated. You can also see that the pieces are magnetic and are sticking together, unless you use your computer upside down this is in the proper orientation, it's hanging onto the tang by magnetism.

I decided I will send it to BM after I contact them tonight, hopefully they can help me out, this piece is a very much important holder to keep the whole handle in one piece. It's a clean break characteristic of very hard steel (D2 in this case) snapping without any bending present. In Yosemite I did test it chopping a bit of green wood, but thats the only hard use it's seen. Haven't dropped this knife ever.

Any input on this? Had this same problem? Know what might cause this?

I hate to see that, especially since I have the same knife, although I haven't had any problems with mine. It looks to me like it is something that should be covered by the warranty. I'd be really surprised if Benchmade didn't replace the knife for you.

That sucks bro and I don't want to rub salt into the wounds but that design seems very poor. Why would they do that instead of using a one piece design ?
I actually considered getting a CSK a while ago but after seeing how they are assembled I would now stay well clear.
If I were you I think I would tell Benchmade that I no longer have any confidence in the knife and would rather have a cash refund than a replacement knife !!!

In the bottom pic the break looks like it has some rust inside on both pieces. Is that the case or is it just the lighting? Could have been a fracture or defect that was weak for a while then just gave way.

It has definitely been broken for long enough for me to wash it and it rust a bit, meaning the rust probably didn't weaken the D2 causing the break.
It's probably not the best design.

Maybe I can convince BM to send me a 710 to replace this.

This is the e-mail I SENT hopefully it covers all the ground it needs to :/

I have a 156 CSK with plain edge that I have found has a broken piece in the bilt system in the tang under the handle. Here is a more detailed description of what happened with pictures

I would like to get this repaired, and I am fairly sure it's not abuse related as I have treated this knife well. I was also wondering if it was possible to "return" the knife for credit towards the purchase of a 710 folder?

Thank you for your help.

Say Heah Boys and Girls, It's a shame that man's Benchmade broke like that, Every once in a while someone gets stuck with a lemon, I'm sure Benchmade made good on it, I also seen a guy fail with his Johnson Adventure Potbelly on YouTube, I beat mine until I get tired sometimes out and about in the bush, It takes it time and time again, So far the same with my Benchmade 156 CSK, But now that I know what the BILT Handle is all about, I might just start using my Benchmade 156 CSK more like a knife. I can say this, It holds a great edge although it's not as easy to sharpen, But with these new abrasive Sharpeners, It's not all that bad. I actually like the look alot more than that of my CarbonV S. R. K., That metal bolster and pommel makes the knife more classy in my opinion. But yeah, I do have to admit it wasn't abused but is used more now that I can make curls with it much better, Yeah, I really like mine it's a awesome knife.

Paul bumps necro threads, it's his thing. I have seen it at least 10 times since I have joined.

Look at his recent posts, it is likely that 1/3 original posts in a thread is necromancy...
