As the title implies my BM 156 CSK has had a failure with the BILT (Bolted InLine Tang).
The pictures describe the problem better than I can, but I will try, I opened up the back of the knife and checked for rust, which there is a small amount and not enough to make me worry. When I got it open I noticed that the top part of the Nut retainer was stuck to the butt cap instead of being part of the tang.
Another strange thing is that the pieces (blade/tang+broken piece) are very magnetic and stick together with the kind of strength you get out of cheap ceramic magnets. Probably heat treated near a strong magnetic field?
Here is the way it comes made.
Here is what mine looks like.
Picture of the damaged edge, looks like a clean break, not folding or bending. Very strange, if I had to guess I would say that there was a flaw in the metal after being treated. You can also see that the pieces are magnetic and are sticking together, unless you use your computer upside down this is in the proper orientation, it's hanging onto the tang by magnetism.
I decided I will send it to BM after I contact them tonight, hopefully they can help me out, this piece is a very much important holder to keep the whole handle in one piece. It's a clean break characteristic of very hard steel (D2 in this case) snapping without any bending present. In Yosemite I did test it chopping a bit of green wood, but thats the only hard use it's seen. Haven't dropped this knife ever.
Any input on this? Had this same problem? Know what might cause this?
