Benchmade Black Blade Coating Removal

Hi.

If a BM knife has the 'BK' designation, it has the 'BK1' blade coating. This stuff instantly scratches, if you use the knife. Ignoring the issue of "Why did I buy a coated blade?", if I buff all the BK1 off the blade, will the Benchmark Butterfly and metal designation (D2 in my case) remain on the knife, or will that be lost also? I was able to 'search' and find a couple of similar threads, but it was unclear to me if the logo will certainly be lost. Also, the link to Steven Roos' photos was dead.

Thanks............Frank

I know this is a very old question. But for anyone in the future who would like to know I am sharing my experience. I removed the BK coating off my BM9100 and the butterfly logo was removed during the process. I used sand paper and did not have to much trouble removing the coating. I have never liked the chalky feeling of Benchmade's coating. I also prefer a satin finished blade... But found a good deal on a black coated one.

$25 and you can get a new blade from Benchmade. I do think they allow you to switch from coated to satin or visa versa. Someone or a phone call can confirm.

No doubt you will lose the BM logo, as it is on top of the black coating. I think BM will let you buy a satin if you want.....as Elite suggested.

I used vinegar (of all things) to remove the cerakote from an m4 blade. It left all logos intact. I believe it worked because the steel is not stainless and was able to break the bond. It MIGHT work with d2 as well to remove other coatings.

Disclaimer: there IS some pitting in the steel. I think I left it submerged a little too long (about 30 hours if I remember correctly), but I like the finish personally.

Problem is my blade is an auto and I am not a LEO. I think I have seen and heard you can not send back any autos to benchmade without the proper paperwork.

Also the 9100 is discontinued... So I am not sure if they will replace blades on discontinued knives. I would love to switch I to it for a plain blade and ditch the serrations. I am sending a couple BMs back for their life sharp program soon. I will ask them and see what their response is.

Epoxy and paint remover takes off the Becker coating pretty good. Make sure to wear gloves though, because that stuff is really strong.

I am very interested to know what they say. Not for personal reasons, just wanna know if BM's awesomeness has any boundaries.

This was a black blade. I used a green Scotch brand pad. As you can see if you look closely the Butterfly is still visible- although like a ghost image.

I know this is an older thread but I wanted to let people know it is possible to keep the markings.
