So I decided I want to buy a 580 barrage, I really like the black
Blade but how is the wear on the black?
I'm hesitant on it because I don't want it to look all beat up an scratch
But I have no experience with black all my current knives are standard color steel.

Any coating will show wear after time. I've had a triage since they came out and I carry it every day on duty. The coating shows wear and you can see scratches in it, but I don't think it looks bad. But if you don't want to see use on your blades I'd suggest only buying stone washed finishes.

True but I thing when coatings chip or wear easy it makes them look cheap an beat quick
Just never owned a black benchmade and want peoples own experiences ?

Even the toughest coat will show sooner or later some wear.
At this extent I think you already know it.
I don't know if Benchmade is one of the toughest coating, but also depends from you personal use.
Going to batoning or cutting a lot of heavy cardboard or piping or light tins like someimes I do will reduce its life.

Moreover the coating to me makes more sense when approaching "protecting" carbon or semi-stainless steel.
I just don't go for coating looking for tactifool or any kind of black look. I prefer patina, scratches, dings, rusts and spots on my knife and I'm not afraid about that.

That's the way because you should go for a different finish if you have any worries about.

Benchmade makes a great knife but their coatings wear pretty easy. The best coatings I have used are the DLC ones. I have DLC coated knives that have seen heavy use for years without significant wear on the coating.

Unfortunately expecting a coated blade that won't eventually show wear is not realistic, not yet anyway. From the best to the worst they will all show wear with use so if you plan on using it and the wear bothers you I strongly suggest getting an uncoated blade.

My experience with BM's black coating's has been varied. Some wear better then others.

Ironically the cheapest one I own, a discontinued BM HK Ascender has shown the best wear resistance on the coating of any knife I've owned. From looking at it you wouldn't believe how much use this knife has seen.

It's my dedicated "Cardboard Box" cutter for years and the coating has held very well I think.

Best of luck!

I've extensively used coated blades from Benchmade, Spyderco and Emerson.

Spyderco's DLC is, by far, the best. It often looks "scratched" after use, but what I'm seeing is pieces of whatever I've cut embedded in the DLC, the blade wipes clean and looks new. The only thing that ever wore the DLC off was when I used the blade to pry some heavy staples out of wood.

Emerson's black ceramic coating is pretty good, just not as awesome as Spyderco's.

Benchmades, I don't know what it's called so I'll go with "Black Magic Marker" coating shows wear from cutting cardboard. That said, I don't mind, I think that the 'wear' makes it look cool.

If you don't like a worn look in a coated knife, do not buy a coated Benchmade (unless it's the HK14715, it's an epic knife that only comes in coated D2).

Beautiful polished edge!

They must have changed something, my recent black Benchmade wore surprisingly easily.

DLC is a wonderful coating for blades as it takes a lot to scratch it. Benchmmades coating is a BK1 coating which will wear pretty easily and it might chip in some areas. I am a fan of the DLC but the BK1 is cool in some cases because it wears a little more and on some knives the wear actually looks very nice.

Thanks,

The Acender is actually a pretty old knife. Had it since I'd say 2008 /9 and I think it was discontinued shortly after that. I really don't remember though.

It's held up though. Like I said, I've been using it to cut up card board boxes for years.*

To be fair when I think about it, the knives I've EDC'd or used for work probably have seen harder overall use but still, I'm impressed with the Acender on many levels including how well the coating's held up. .*

BM also offers a Cerakote coating which is a lot better then the BK1 coating and is seen on some of thier harder use knives like the Contego. Don't know how it compares with DLC as I've never owned a knife with one but from what I've read DLC seems pretty though.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one
