Benchmade Black Coating Woes

Hi! I've been lurking about reading as much as I can about knives. This is my first post. I own aprox 7 "good" knives prior to this.

I know I read about this in here somewhere. Can't find it again.

I bought a Benchmade 350BT at a gunshow Saturday. For a lower end knife I thought it to be a pretty nice piece.

Today I used it just a bit to cut some grass away from where I needed to put a board level. The tip is already starting to look naked!

Needless to say, this was my first and will be my last Black blade.

It will not however be my last Benchmade!

In addition to this BM, I have Gerber AF Covert, CRKT M16 03Z, Old Uncle Henry LB7, Full size Gerber AF, and an Opinal a buddy gave me.

I also have a Kershaw KO Chive, and a Schrade Green Bruin. And lastly several old multiblade folders and a handfull of clone junk folders.

When budget allows, I will have several more "good" knives!

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

I know what you mean about the coatings. If you aren't as worried about corrosion, you don't need them at all. Good steel and especially a little maintenance will take care of that -- until you go for something like a Mayo TnT with a blade and handle that won't corrode no matter what!

You can polish off the black eventually, or faster with a Dremel. If you go for uncoated, remember, the shinier the better as far as resisting rust. Stonewash is also good.

Boron carbide is a gleaming black that resists scratches and won't come off. But unless it has been chromed first, corrosion can seep in underneath, and the blade will deteriorate without your even seeing it happen.

Ahhh ... so it goes ... from, how many knives have you bought, to how many knives have you bought this month, to how many knives have you bought this week, to ... buddy, can you spare a dime?

Welcome to the forums.

You feel exactly the way I do about BT2.

BT2 = :barf: :barf: :barf:

I really like the Axis AFCK but wont get one because I can't stand BT2. I hope they eventually come out with a satin finish.

Hmmm... I was at buddy can you spare a dime long ago!

The two Gerbers and the CKRT were all in one month, a couple months back. The Schrade is my utility knife always in left front pocket bought April to replace a Gerber LST that blew up (fell apart one day).

The Benchmade is my first(BM)... and most likely last (new knife) for a while. Well maybe a Kershaw Vapor from Wallyworld.....

Next good knife purchase somewhere down the road is toss-up... Emerson CQC7A or BM 710 Axis. (will certainly have both eventually!)

Actually, BT2 is great stuff on user knives. It wears down, but keeps on protecting. Be patient, and once the coating gets very worn, it looks really cool, in terms of a macho looking user. It is no good on a pretty EDC though.

There are definitely different qualities of black coatings to be had.

Whatever Spyderco is putting on their metal pocket clips wears off around the edges and bends in a few days.

Whatever Emerson uses on their pocket clips stays on, and looks new regardless of abuse.

I have had good luck with Black-T and TiCN as blade coatings.
