whats your guys opinion on bladeplay? iv recently noticed some side to side on my benchmade griptilian that iv had for a little under a year. the blade is still centered and all, but it didn't have any play until i opened it up and cleaned it out, i lubed up the washers and axis lock and put it all back together thats when i noticed it. its not the first time iv taken it apart though. any advice for this? is it ok?

Side to side play can be fixed by tightening the pivot screw. Ive seen a lot of benchmades with up and down blade play. What i normally do is take it apart and spin the axis lock around and that has fixed a lot of knives and made them rock solid. You will just have to play with the pivot screw though for side to side. I mean a little side to side is ok but you can usually find the sweet spot where there isnt any. Some knives the sweet spot is very small but others it isnt that bad. It really all depends on the tolerances of the knife. I know for my grip it took me a little while to find it but once i did i put blue loctite on the pivot screw found the sweet spot and its been rock solid ever since.

Yep. Tighten the pivot screw. Keep tight pivots on all my knives cause i hate blade play. I never had a Benchmade that had blade play unless pivot screw was loose. The blades are easy to deploy and operate smooth as butter.

Did you completely take the knife apart? If so, one possibility is that the pivot is ever so less tight as it originally was, BUT it feels equally tight as before because the washers may not be on the original sides/angle, and this can result in exerting more resistance to the blade's ability to swing/swing-freely for a short while as the washers slightly wear and smooth out accordingly to the surfaces they are making contact with (which are harder than the bronze washers). While this happens on a very minor level, it sometimes can make enough difference to be noticed. I am describing this absolutely terribly, but the best comparison I can make this to is how it is advised that after installing a new wheel on a car that the lug nuts be slightly tightened after a short period of usage to adjust for the very minor initial wear on parts than can occur shortly after a change is made. The solution to this is to more or less either use the knife as-is and check a few times to see if the pivot needs to be tightened, or (my preference) to tighten the pivot to a point where the resistance it applies to the blade is slightly greater than it was before and if this is the issue, the resistance the blade has will decrease slightly even though the pivot screw itself did not move.

Another cause of blade play can be when the standoff or spacer screws (i.e., the screws other than those on the pivot and pocket clip) are not tightened evenly, and in some cases are over-tightened.

Also, what lubricant did you use? The type of lubricant can affect how much resistance the blade sees quite a bit, which can in-turn affect how much the user tightens the pivot.. For example, the lubricant I use on the pivot/washers/omega springs/AXIS contact points on my Benchmades results in a blade that swings completely freely versus how most Benchmades do not swing freely from the factory, but with much smoother operation and yet the pivot itself is about equally tight as it was from the factory.

Finally, is your blade coated?

Some side to side blade play on Benchmade axis lock is fine. Let it wear in a little and tighten the pivot a little more every once in a while. Eventually it will be smooth without blade play.

The biggest question is how much play is there? A little bit is no issue, a lot is definitely an issue. If the blade can rattle I would send it in, but if you have to force it to play then it should be fine.

I have four Benchmade axis lock knives and they have all developed blade play and I believe it's from flipping them closed. I used loctite on all of them and problem solved I would suggest getting some blue loctite and go at it.
