Benchmade BM 670 detained by Canada Customs

I am a Canadian, and I recently ordered a Benchmade BM 670 from the United States. The Canada Border Services Agency has detained the knife pending 'Admissability'. I have been unable to talk to anyone at the C.V.S. Prohibited Importations Unit because no one answers the phone.

I could only leave a message with my reference number. No one has returned my call.

So, my question is: Does anyone knows what status these knives have in Canada? I looked around on the net and it is possible to buy the same knife at several Canadian on-line shops. I wish I had.

You would think that if the knife is sold in Canada at reputable dealers, then it should pass through customs without issue. I did mention that the knife is available for sale in Canada in one of my messages.

Are there any other Canadian forum users who have had this same experience?

Canada bans knives that can be opened through gravity or inertia. It's possible that your 670 might be confiscated under these grounds. Spydercos in particular seem to subject to this, so it's possible that they're told to look for opening holes, which your Bewnchmade has. Many Canadian knife buyers (buying from the USA) ask the seller or dealer to tighten up the pivot screw so it can't be flicked open.

Best of luck.

There is a way to have it sent back,,however it is a pain in the Arse,, and VERy hard to do....

Us Canucks at BFC have a protocol we do,,so they make it through..There are also certain dealers we only deal with in the US..

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions.

I learned that the House of Knives has an document from an official government agency that affirms that the Benchmade knives that they sell are legal in Canada.

The House of Knives sells both the BM Osborne 942 (Axis lock) and the BM 670 Osborne Apparition (Assisted Opening). I had ordered both separately and already received one version (previously) of the Osborne 940 series from the US.

Since it has proven impossible to actually speak to anyone (voicemail only) at the C.V.S. Prohibited Importations Unit, I don't even know which of my awaited knives they are actually holding.

Today I'm going to get a copy of that document and send it to CBSA along with a nice registered letter. The fact that CBSA would detain the knife at all would seem to indicate that they don't really know what is or isn't already approved for sale, and being sold, in Canada.

If a knife is already being sold in Canada, and it has already been officially documented, there really is no question of it being allowed in!

I beleive people need to assert their legal rights otherwise we'll likely slowly lose them due to complacency.
