Benchmade Bone Collector AXIS folder, Large vs. Mini?

Hey all. I have had my eye on this knife for a long time, and I'm still going back and forth between the large and the mini version. I am a little turned away from the large due to the 0.735" thick handles (for pocket carry), but I usually prefer a blade a little longer than 3". At 5.9oz, the weight of the large might be a slight issue for an edc too.

Can you guys/gals comment on these two, if you have held them, pocket carried them, and/or used them? Which do you prefer for an edc? Is the 0.618" thickness of the mini still too thick? What about taking either one and sanding the grips down thinner? Am I fooling myself, thinking that the extra 0.41" in blade length of the large makes a real difference? Has anyone out there sanded down the grips of one of these, and how did it turn out?

Lastly, overall opinions or similar suggestions?

Get the large. It's nice. I love bigger knives though.

I have only had the mini for about a week but I think it is perfect for edc....I also have a regular griptilian and I like the mini bone collector better in an edc role.

Hope these reviews might help you.

Benchmade Bone Collector Review. Large

Spyderco Manix 2 Review

I think these two can be good contenders, however, the Manix is cheaper and fals more into the Benchmade 550HG range (another contender IMO). In the Bone Collector price range you can have a look at the Spyderco Gayle Bradley.

All are fine knives, just depends on what you want and find appealing.

I've had both. I never liked the large. Just didn't feel right to me. Since that's 100% SUBjective, it only means that it didn't feel right in my hand. The mini is one of my fav BMs and IMAO is one of the best pure utility EDCs they've ever made in spite of the "droppings" on the blade. Both sizes are far stronger than anything I'll ever need for what I do with them and the F&F was excellent on both. Had to send the mini in to Lifesharp when I first got her for the kind of edge that should have been on there when she left the shop, but Lifesharp does great work and she came back ready to go. After that, she was easy to maintain with a Sharpmaker and a strop.

I carry mine all Winter. Summer carry is to heavy. While I carry it, it's not a brick, it's fine. I also had to send to lifesharp when I first got mine, but had it engraved while there so it was worth it for me.

I have the large and modded the handle I got it from another member who flattened the"ribbing" I then flattened it right off and re-filed a new rib like pattern !very low profile and slides into a pocket very in-noticed now ! Awesome knife'!! I am looking to sell or trade it so I can try out a mini !!! I dont think you can go wrong either way !!

Great! Thanks for all the tips! I am leaning towards getting the Mini and seeing how that goes. Maybe later I will end up with the Large, if the Mini seems to be lacking :) (I doubt it) I plan to mod whichever one I get by drilling the end and installing a carbide-tip glass breaker, for the ultimate edc ;) I know other knives have carbide-tips, but not the steel that I want and I really like the AXIS lock.

I will probably go for the Green/Black G10 handles, only because I have seen the Walnut in pictures looking excellent and also looking cheap. I don't want to risk getting a dud. If anyone can comment on how they like their Walnut grips, you might be able to sway me. I am looking for something non-tactical looking, but having a rugged, functional grip is higher on the priority list.

I usually like smaller knives because they are very easy to carry and don't press into my thigh when I sit, bend or whatever.

Looking at the numbers, I don't know about the Large Bone Collector...
handle thickness: 0.735" | closed length: 4.84" | blade length: 3.36"

In comparison, the Adamas folder...
handle thickness: 0.73" | closed length: 4.88" | blade length: 3.82"

Aside from carrying ~2 oz. more weight, the Adamas gives you a 0.5" longer blade (and thicker blade) and about the same size in pocket as the Bone Collector. It kinda doesn't seem right that the BC has such a big grip :)
