Benchmade BT2 coating...safe with food ?

I am planning to use a BT2 coated AFCK on a upcoming camping trip. The knife will be used in different tasks including the cutting of food. Is there any health hazards with the BT2 coating coming off the blade onto my food? Thank you for your responses.

The BT2 coating is a teflon based coating (similar to what T-Fal uses in their frying pans). While I'm not sure about teflon being edible I'm pretty sure it's "food safe"-meaning food can come in contact with it safely. Now, don't go eating the blade coating though

And if you're wondering if the BT2 coating comes off, only if you scrape it against something fairly hard (metal stuff mostly). When out on a picnic I often used my coated blades for food preperation and have never had any problems. Except for the strange compulsion to buy lots of knives. Hmmm...

I'm curious about whether or not knives that have been treated with Tuf-Cloth are safe for food? Couldn't find anything on the Sentry Solutions web site about it.

I have never really had much problems with coatings flaking off into your food. Besides, I think Teflon is fairly stable and doesn't react with very many things in funny ways. The little bit on your knife isn't going to harm you, unless you purposely scratch it off and eat it all, and even then it probably still won't harm you.

I've heard the blade coating is pretty harmless, and besides you shouldn't really end up scraping off a significant amount of it anyway.

Just be sure to wash/wipe/clean off the blade before using it for food preparation or consumtion! And I wouldn't oil the blade or pivot area prior to such chores either.

I have an AFCK with bt2 as well and love it, only it now sits second chair behind my 710. Enjoy your camping trip!

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

This is probably a good time to clarify that BT2 is not Teflon and it most certainly is not Black T.

By calling it BT2 after using Black T it would infer that BT2 is better or a more advanced coating than Black T. This is not the case and in fact a couple of weeks ago when I called Benchmade and asked about the BT2 coating I was told by a warranty rep that the old coating is better, meaning Black T.

Yup, Walter Birdsong's Black T is still better than BT2.

I asked this becauce a 6 month old AFCK is showing more wear than by 5 year old AFCK.

Dim's da facts.
