Benchmade BT2 coating - Sharpening?

Hi all, this is my first post.
I'm considering buying a Benchmade 710hssr, or a AFCK with M2, to replace my spyderco native. From what I've read, the M2 steel rusts quickly witout the BT2 coating. My concern is this - one of my friends had a BM 910 stryker, and after sharpening, it looked like the BT2 coating was entirely gone from the edge of the blade, and it looked terrible. My friend was no great knife sharpener by any means, but, then again, neither am I. Is this something I should worry about? With the BT2 coating, can the knife be sharpened without going all shiny where its been sharpened?
I dont want my blade rusting if its exposed after sharpening. Beyond looking bad, I doubt very much its good for the blade. How do you all deal with this? Would I be better off just getting a plain blade (no BT2) in the ATS-34?
Thanx!
Rob

My understanding is that the BT2 is supposed to still protect when scratched. BT2 will not protect the edge of the knife, but it should be ok as long as you take care of it.
