I found KPL’s video on YouTube about swapping out scales from Grivory to Flytanium, which was cool for disassembly/reassembly/cleaning/tuning/lubing the Bugout. It not only helped me make my aluminum scaled M390 blade drop and flick open buttery smooth like it is on ceramic caged bearings, but have a very satisfying opening and close sound to this action.

The crazy thing is that it uses Phosphorus Bronze (PB) washers with the Axis lock, so I have only experienced this somewhat with my Quiet Carry Drift and 2 Spyderco Paramilitary knives. All my previous 10 Benchmade’s never worked this well.

To be honest, it came in a bit off center, sounded gritty open and closing, and was a bit tight to allow true dropshut action. I have liked the Bugout a lot and enjoyed CF-Elite bfore I gave it to my oldest son as one of his college graduation gifts. I bought mini Bugout for my Father-in-law for Father’s Day. Both were pretty good.

I really liked my Adamas regular and mini, but they were too heavy duty for what I do. The regular is too big unless I got into doing a lot of outdoor stuff. I sold them, but finally but the bullet on the aluminum scales Bugout with Cerakoted M390 steel When I had some rewards to make it work my whole to ’try out.’

Boy, I am glad that I did and that I took it apart. I polished and smoothed out the PB washers using my leather strop. the PB washers were very corroded and i could very easily feel pronounced burrs. I also used my leather strop to polish the blade near the Pivot which had no Cerakote on it. It fet like it was not smooth.

Once, I did this, cleaned all of the knife and add heavy viscous Nano-Oil (85) to the omega springs and where they’d rub against the plates that hold them the inside of the aluminum scales. Then I began to reassemble the knife lubricating the washers and the contact points of the blade with the low viscous Nano-Oil (10).

I then used Locktite 242 on the screw threads for the scales and pivot. I saw that my blade was off slightly, so I used the ever faithful Metal Complex video to center my blade. And, yes, it is dead nuts and LeftyEDC would say.

i found the sweepspot where the pivot screw was only as tight as it needed to be and there was no bladeplay at. Not only would it drop shut, but the action felt like a well fitted caged ceramic bearing washer. I’m still enjoying this knife days later and feel like I have a renewed appreciation of Axis/Able lock knives all over again.

In fact, I applied this to my Hogue black G10 Doug Ritter RSK MK1-G2, and it is now way more smooth, quiet, solid than before when I almost sold it. Not now!!

So in the end, I have a very fun and solid Bugout, confirming that maintenance on Axis/Able locks is not a scary thing. I’m not sure if I’m allowed, so please let me know and ill remove the links to the videos that really helped me. It is so much fun when you can enjoy your knives more fully!!
