I just purchased a new Benchmade Shootout and the shot show mini adamas this past week. It's not my first Benchmade's, but they made me think to myself once again. I've always wondered why their factory black clips look like they've been sitting around for ten years and developed a patina ? You get a Spyderco or zt or any other companies really and they're always nice and shiny when new lol ? Don't get me wrong, I love both of these new knives, especially the Mini Adamas. It's been in my pocket since I got it a week ago. Just curious why the clips always look aged is all ?

Everything about Benchmade seems off and wrong to me... I don't know why their blades come dull according to so many, why 2 dollar versions of their springs never break, why their clips look ancient... and I hope not to ifnd out.

I've just never seen a thread pop up like "My Spyderco is messed up...", whereas there's so many about Benchmade. Guess it could be cause they're bigger, but Buck doesn't have these problems.

Speaking of the Adamas, it's the only Benchmade I have interest in, the Cruwear version. That and MAYBE the 940. Those seem nice if they work.

Actually both of these are in cruwear and are plenty sharp. Just always laugh to myself when I look at their clips. I've never had one that didn't look like it's been through a war lol.

I think it has to do with the type of coating involved. I'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject, but I think alot of Benchmade clips are either parkerized or have a black oxide finish. I actually quite dig the look, prefer it to painted clips, and think it looks even better as it wears (I often even give mine a stonewash).

I guess it's a to each their own thing. I dig benchmades finishes too, and they wear well. Their painted clips do not (like all painted clips). I've only had a couple benchmades come dull, but they were easily corrected (few swipes on a stone).

Not as consistent as spyderco, but still great knives and I've always gotten great customer service from them.

Yeah I mean it doesn't bother me, it's just a pocket clip. But what you said makes sense.

but Buck doesn't have these problems.
I disagree.
Recent Bucks have come to me with awful, uneven bevels, poor centering, a bent tip, and stiff, two-handed opening.
The only complaints I've had with Benchmade has been a less than shaving-sharp edge.

And if you don't like the "Parkerized" Benchmade clips, the polished ones look nice on some knives.
The "weathered" finish made me scratch my head at first but now I like it, and they hold up well.
Painted clips get scratched and end up looking worse, in my opinion.

Haha I remember when I got my first Benchmade clip in the finish you're talking about. I was like "what the hell is this?" It's like after they finish them they dump them loose and dry into a 55 gallon metal drum and just grab one out of it on the assembly line. I still love me some of the Benchmades, but yea, I definitely know what you mean.

I replaced the few BMs I have with the southern grind shorty clip. They are so much better. Ide do it to any emerson as well (if I owned one)

Thanks guys I learned something new. I didn't know that they were parkerized. Like I said, I don't love or hate it. Just didn't know why they looked like they did, and now I do ! Yall have a great rest of your weekend.

The parkerized split arrow clips were my favorite, looks like they stopped making them unfortunately.

I’ve bought 11 benchmades in the last 3 weeks and every one has been spot on. Have a fixed Adamas and another shot show mini on the way as well.

The appearance of the clips is just the coating. It’s a very tough coating though.

Clips look aged because some people are always crashing into stuff on their daily routine. I stopped clipping knives on after having one snag on something when I was in a hurry and didn't feel it come off. Good knives cost too much to be losing them out in the real world - $100 dollars is a good chunk of money to me. Knives ride in a pocket or in a snapped belt sheath now. I also enjoy not being eyeballed by every cop I meet.

The pocket clip finish on new Benchmades that I've gotten over the last 4-5 years is black oxide. The black oxide gives the clip a sort of weathered look but wears much, much better than the black painted finish that they were using previously, which chip off at the edges very easily and looked terrible very quickly.
