Gentlemen, I recently purchased what is claimed to be a new bm 710bk1 in d2, now I'm not familiar with Bm's coatings but..

As you can see the tang/Pivot area is not coated, this seems odd to me since I owned several knives by other manufacturers such as spyderco who completely coat that whole blade including tang. With that said, to you members with more experience with benchmade, is this normal?

That's common for an Axis lock style knife. That's where the Axis bar contacts the tang and lock face. If BM were to put a coating there, it would increase friction thus making the knife less smooth.

That is incorrect. The Axis lock rolls along the rounded part of the tang, and as OB mentioned if it were coated, it would not work well. Also, Spyderco knives are not 100% coated either, the lock interface on the Military, Pacific Salt, Delica, Endura (you name it) do not have coatings on the friction surfaces or lock interfaces. If they did the tolerances would be completely off and they would be unsafe. Same goes for just about any coated folder with any lock.

Ah..ic...Well thank you all for your contributions and your help. Definitely learned quite a bit about the coatings.
