Hey members,

Just curious on the Benchmade 810 Contego? Is the glass breaker an option? Or is it that all of them comes with the glass breaker.

Thanks in advance...

I love the glassbreaker. Not something I ever see me using, but I like it being there.... just in case. Heck, if I didn't carry things just in case, I probably wouldn't even be carrying something as big as even just a Griptilian, let alone the Contego.

...+1

Thanks members, I just sent my 810 to Benchmade to have the glass breaker put on, apparently, mine just fell off

Sorry for necroposting but anyone know how the glass breaker is attached? Glued in? Threaded?

All the standard productions come w/. I think its been left off the Limited w/ M390.

I thought I remembered that the glass breaker will set the first time its used. A resin/glue of sort is activated on impact? Can anyone confirm this?

The backspacer/glass breaker has had issues. Staining and fracturing....MIM part, not sure if BM has addressed the problem.

The technician that I spoke to told me that it is an epoxy that fractures when it's used. Whether that makes it stronger or weaker after the fact is beyond me. It is a design feature so I'm guessing you are right.

Epoxy? I don't quite get that.

My glass breaker fractured with no usage, and I sent it back to Benchmade. They kindly paid for shipping in both directions, and I was pleased with their customer service. But it does seem that the glass breaker may have some issues.

Yes. The epoxy holds the breaker and fractures upon impact. It's just the way the epoxy works, I wasn't referring to the breaker itself fracturing. Bummer that you had a problem, but I agree, their cs is top notch.

Do you mean the carbide breaker or backspacer?

The M4 standard production black version has the glass breaker and the KW exclusive M390 black and blue model does not. That is my understanding and I own both knives.

When I sent my contego in for some work completely unrelated to the backspacer they sent it back with a different one. The original backspacer was the silver one everyone has said cracks or rusts. So maybe the black one is the fix. IDK.

Is there any chance that you could please post a picture of the new backspacer?I would like to compare the the one that I have on my 810 M4 model to the one Benchmade sent back with your knife.
Thank you for your time....

Thank you cambyz28!
The backspacer you have on yours is definitely not the same as mine. I wonder if BM changed the steel they use, or they are just coating it to help prevent oxidation?
Thanks again for your time and posting the pictures ....

I don't mean to bump a thread that's so old, but I just received my NIB Benchmade 810bk and it was actually missing the carbide glass breaker.

I called BM and asked them if this had happened before and their awesome customer service rep said it is rare but it has happened in the past. She was super sweet and sent me a pre-paid UPS label and said to ship it in and they'll fix it on the house.

Sort of a bummer, but I won't let it take away from one of my new all-time fav's. This thing is amazing, and BM CS is top notch. I just look forward to getting it taken care of.

Also, the breaker is not threaded in.
