Benchmade contego clip stripped screw hole

The other day I was rushing past a metal shelf and my contego clip caught the side of it. Ripped the screws clean out, stripping the screw holes completely. I'm guessing benchmade would fix it for me, but I'm not sure. If possible I'd like to take care of it myself.
I don't really have experience tapping holes, but from what I've read benchmade uses a size 2-56 screw for the clips. Would I be able to re-tap it using a 3-48 tap?
Any tips or advice would be apprecitated.
Thanks
-Steve

UPDATE:
Turns out the replacement screws I had tried were the wrong size. It appears that the threads in the linears held strong. It was only the screws that had stripped. A couple new screws and I'm back in business with this excellent knife! I'm more careful about brushing against objects though...)

You can use a helical insert. It's basically a spring that you can put into the hole that is threaded for the right screws. You can get a pack of 10 2-56 helical inserts for like $5 from McMaster.

You'd also need to get the special tap for the helicoil insert if you go that route.

Thanks for the info on the helicoil/tool. Interesting hardware but the tool makes it too expensive for my uses. I think I will end up sending this one in so I don't mess it up.
