Hi all,
I'm brand new here and was just wondering if anyone has experience with the "custom shop" blade designs through Benchmade. I have tried emailing the company several times to no avail. Are the designs/blade backgrounds/letters laser-etched or are they printed on the blade somehow? How do they hold up to normal wear?

Thanks!

You'd have better success calling them. (1-800-800-7427)

Benchmade laser engraves their blades. Only the very, very old models where stamped. All new blades are laser etched and I've never seen one wear to the point of not being visible but that's just my experience.

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Hi SharpenHer,

Through our Custom Knife Maker program, images/designs and type are done via a laser etching process. On coated blades it essentially etches in to the coating while satin blades are etched into the steel.

I hope that helps answer your question!

I just got my custom Griptilian. The laser etching turned out a gold color which was a surprise and very disappointing. The blade also came off center. For the price I paid I am less than pleased. Just being honest, not bitching about it.

Why not give their CS a call and see if they can remedy it? I have a custom mini Grip that I received from my last Army unit when I was getting out and it definitely is NOT gold tinted. Perhaps they can help you out with centering the blade and see what's up with the pattern?

I did contact their customer service. I was given a excuse why it turned out gold.

This is what I was told.

As to the gold tone to the laser marking that you have on the knife, it is not unusual depending on the laser marking machine used to create the image and its settings.
The custom knives are done with a setting that is meant to fit as many different marking applications as possible as the images are not augmented from what the customer has selected. This is normal for these and not a defect.

I talked to their customer service again today and they were very helpful and nice as usual. I sent over the pictures again and was told they were going to talk to the laser guy to see if they did it again if it would turn out different as I let them know that if it was a one off or it could be done again with different results then I would gladly send it back to be done again. If not I would like a refund for the knife. I got a call back with a return label for a refund so I assume they said it would be the same if done again.

I'n my last post I should of stated it was not a excuse but rather a explanation.

It's unfortunate you have to return it, but once again BM takes care of their customers

I too, would like to see it offered in the near future.

I'm with you guys. I have wanted to order a knife or two, but kept holding off because I don't feel like I need more knives with the same steel. I'd like something different. Maybe I'll just have to order a Ritter or something.
