Benchmade has their new customize a grip thing to choose colors and steel on a grip or mini grip.

What do you guys think about this?

Is it worth paying retail price?

I think the only thing that's worth it is if you get the S30v steel but that's just me.

I guess its awesome that you can get it exactly the way you want, at least from the options offered from the factory. To be honest, I wouldn't mind paying retail for it, I'm new to the knife modding, and it would be unlikely I could do anything similar to the factory without paying more for materials.

If you're into the griptilians, this seems pretty cool. You could do a lot worse for $125, seems like not such a bad deal actually. Personally, I don't like the feel of the rubber grip.

I wish they'd do custom options like this for more knives. I'd order DLC blade and hardware coating on everything. But, until then, this is a good jumping off point.

Hopefully this service will take off like nikeid did for sneakers and they will offer more of their popular models so we can have a little color freedom with our favorite benchmade offerings.

Now that I thought about it the layout for this customization thing screams nikeid. Lol.

Pretty cool. I think it's a great idea to be able to customize a production knife, but don't like the idea of paying retail price for a blade.

I think that's a really cool feature. I would have liked to try that out before I bought my "regular" grip. I guess I understand about the costs, but even if you order just a regular 551 with nothing special, 154CM, etc. from the custom shop, it's still $125. Maybe it's due to the overhead of dealing with the custom shop. Buck does the same thing. Still a cool service to offer. I hope they get a lot of takers on it.

its pretty cool except i tried making one with D2 and a black handle and in the bottom right hand corner there was a little error sign saying its currently unavailable, now i know im being nit picky but why would a black handle affect production for a d2 blade? its not like it changes the lock, or anything

I will get one, but I wish it gave an example of what the images look like on the blade.

It could be because Benchmade makes a D2 version with the black handles for Cabelas. Maybe they have an exclusive contract to be the only ones to sell the black handle/d2 versions.

My guess as well. :)

Same thing happened when I tried to do tan handles with S30V, those are for the NRA knives only.
