Benchmade D2

I own two Benchmade balisongs and one griptillian that use D2 steel. Out of all my Benchmade knives, I like their D2 a lot more than their other knives I own in s30v.

Does anyone know where Benchmade sources their D2 from? I know many of their steels come from Crucible but I'm curious to where they get their D2. I know a lot of D2 comes out of China but I'm sure they're using American made steel in all their knives (minus a few of the Bohler steels used in the past).

Any info or insight would be appreciated!

There's a big difference between d2 and cpm-d2.. Check out some of the posts by @Nathan the Machinist

As for the Chinese, the larger factories that are trusted are all using bohler k110. Others are just using anything labeled d2 which if you check zknives shows so many varieties of d2.

Benchmade use the standard version of d2. Haven't ever heard of major issues from BM d2 besides burnt edges of coarse.

Mo2 I would be surprised if users could tell the difference between production heat treats of D2 and CPM-D2 from Benchmade. If the price difference really is less than $2 per blade (and probably significantly less for Benchmade) I doubt that they use regular D2 based strictly on cost

Your suggesting Benchmade use cpm version? I'm confused by your comment.

I’ve never heard of them using the CPM version, but if they did, I doubt Benchmade users could tell the difference
