I have an old Emerson Design CQC-7 from the 90s that was gifted to me a few years ago. The previous owner is a friend who gifted it to me for the nostalgia because he knows I had bought and carried one years ago when they first came out. It was the first Benchmade knife I ever bought, and the reason I bought more. He had lost the back spacer and screws, so it was up to me to make it functional again which I did by adding standoffs and replacing the screws.

Now I am looking into selling a few of my knives to help fund some of the fees of filing a divorce, and funding life as a single father of a teen daughter. So I was curious if, all these years later, there is a way to order an original back spacer for it? I'd like to put it back the way it's supposed to be, to help increase the sale value as much as possible if it is doable.

Thank for any help
Brian

The best way to get this answered is to contact Benchmades Customer Service. Going through the forums, this one and Benchmades Forum, you’ll find that they can produce a miracle now and then.

Thank you, I'll try contacting them again. I tried that route for making it functional when I first got it, but the answer I received was to send it in and they would be able to repair or replace it. I didn't want to risj it being replaced then, and now it seems a lot of trouble to go through to sell a knife. I'm not even sure what the market value of it would even be either way, repaired or as is.

I have, and have had, quite a few of these knives. The knives have aged well considering the are 20+ years old. There are two Achilles heels, the scale screws go directly into the G10. These will strip out easily if one is not aware of this. The second is the back spacer. The material does not age well. I don't know if certain oils or cleaner contribute to this. It is not uncommon to disassemble a perfectly fine looking 970 and have the spacer crumble into multiple pieces.

The fix for the first is to install nutserts. BMK will do this for you using the same nutserts as the Ares series knives. The fix for the second is to use barrel spacers. BMK has not had replacement back spacers for many years (for these knives). And I would be suspect of any new old stock they may of had.
I would love to see one of the custom scale makers make a replacement back spacer for the 970/974 CQC series of knives.

I'm not sure what the actual market value for one is, but I know all original or not there is high demand for that knife and I've seen them sell for crazy prices on different sites.

Thanks guys!! I really appreciate the input very much, but I don't think it would be worth it to try to put it back pristine to sell it, I think I'd just end up going backwards money wise.

Probably have more luck listing it in the WTS section.

The statement made to potential buyers that you would listen to offers could be construed as trying to skirt the boards TOS, specifically to the no auctions/price must be listed policy.

..As a Gold member since '07 I'm sure you're aware...prehaps just a lapse due to your current distractions.

Congratulations on the custody win. Pretty heavy stuff for a knife inquiry.

Best wishes and good luck with the sale.

Knife is worth about $100 +/- in my opinion. I could be way off..

Thanks guys!! I really appreciate the input very much. I am beyond broke at the moment and need to sell this and a few other things, but I don't think it would be worth it to try to put it back pristine to sell it, I think I'd just end up going backwards money wise.

What I did was find new screws and standoffs and put it back together and have been carrying it a little. Mostly I prefer small fixed blades over folders these days, but this one suits some of the illustrations for an article I am writing so it has been going out with me. It functions just fine, is actually easier to keep clean and see if it is dirty, and I actually like the look of it better to be honest.

other than the issues it's causing with gas and groceries at the moment, I am actually okay with being broke this time, because of why I am broke. As of this 9:42 this past Tuesday I am now free of my former spouse and have primary custody of my daughter. Now I just need to recover some financially so I can keep her seen to properly. So if you know of someone interested in buying this one, I am certainly willing to listen to offers as my brain is mush after the past two years of this struggle and I have no real idea what to price it at, and having sold all but one of my very special knives to fund this battle, one more can't hurt as m daughter means more to me than any of my personal possessions.

Thanks for the reminder. I fixed it. And yeah, pretty heavy. If not I wouldn't even be trying to figure out value or even caring what it is.
