Is there any reason (collectibility) for not using a first production Benchmade? I don't yet own a knife that I am unwilling to use, but am wondering if I may be a little short sighted. I own many knives that range in value from $50 - $500. Custom and production.

Maybe if it was a model that ended up running for a long time and becoming very popular, like the 710.

Nothing special about first run Benchmades. Use it in good health.

Benchmade loves putting serial numbers on knives. Often they do 500 Pre-Production knives (how a run of 500 can be considered "pre" production and not actual production is something I can't explain), and/or 500 or 1000 First Production Run knives. Sometimes there's more of these knives than unmarked ones.

Odd that companies keep doing this, even though most people don't like markings on their blades. I've seen these on Kershaws, too, and Spyderco has their "collector's club" thing.

For whatever reason, i love the "first production" gimmick.

I have a few BM's with the mark, and it's kinda cool to think you have one of the "first runs" of the new design.

I also don't like too much writing on my knife blades, so go figure:)

i have a Benchmade CSK II First Production. I've come to understand that, manufactured knves are not an "investment", never will be unless its a rare Gerber MK II from the Nam era or an original 5th Special Forces knife from Al Mar or SOG or something. Nowadays i think that manufactures make so many of a popular knife it would take a couple of generations for a knife to get rare enough to make money.

Only reason I like having something numbered is for the fact that I will usually know it's mine.
