The other thread on the worth of tanto blades has prompted me to look at tanto knives again. One of them is the Benchmade Gaucho. Does anyone have experience of this knife?

Great knife! I'd say get the M4 version from Knife Works. I saw the blade shape and didn't even consider it. After reading some other reviews I pulled the trigger on the M4 version. Since I was sure it wouldn't be one of my favorites, I decided to just use it for everything and make it a hard use knife. I was completely mistaken about not liking it - it's a great knife and the blade is fantastic.

Yes. I find that it's of an equal caliber to the other Osbourne series knives, though a bit more robust. Great knife, and one of the few tanto styled knives that I genuinely like. :)

I have the NRA gaucho (same knife as BMs M4 gaucho, only with gunmetal handles and 154CM blade) and I really like it. I dont really even classify it as a tanto. the blade shape just kind of flows into the tip and it's not really that up swept like most tantos. I like it!

was my first benchmade! For me the blade is a pain to sharpen, not hard, I'm just lazy since I have the CE too. I like the fuller handle shape compared to the other thinner Osbourne designs. Aesthetically I think the blade is killer.

I keep a 154cm partial serrated version in kitchen for box opening and have carried an M4 plain edge version off and on for a few months now.

I've come to like the design. Not too small, even though I generally like 4-inch and up bladed knives. The big recurve works well cutting rope, cardboard, etc. The curved tip performs well.

I don't know why they call the blade a "tanto". It is more along the lines of the Breeden Captain and the Offset, just not as exaggerated. More useful IMO.

The M4 version of the Gaucho is a good deal, IMO. I like carbon steel in general due to the way these steels often sharpen and M4, even with Benchmade's heat-treat (I would prefer the steel harder), takes a really nice crisp edge that lasts a good long bit of time.

Give the knife a try. The design grew on me and I suspect it'll grow on most anyone who uses one regularly.

Of the CPM M4 knives that I bought , which is everything up to but not including the 806, the M4 guacho is the best finished, and sharpest out of the box. With the 710, and 760 I had problems with the G10, alignment, the framelock, and with the 760, edges around 50-60 degrees inclusive.

The Guacho was the only one really finished to benchmade standards IMO. My two are really great users right out of the box. Can't say the same about the next two. Joe

Thanks to all who replied. It is reassuring to see that all the responses are positive. I will buy one and try it out myself.

I have the M4 version. The ergos are phenomenal on this knife.I never thought an aluminum handled knife could be so comfortable.I'm still kinda 'on the fence' about the blade design since I'm normally not into recurves or tantos.I just bought it,cause I wanted to try out the M4 steel & I got this at a good price. It performs pretty darn good though IMO.
