the benchmade griptilian is an awesome knife for anyone loooking for a large or small knife having the 550-553 for the larege ones and 555-557 being the smaller ones. i will be reveiwing the benchmade griptilian 550bkhgod. it is 8.07 inches overall with a 154cm blade being 3.45 inches. the blade is 0.115 inches thick with a modified sheepsfoot blade. the handle is 4.62 inches and 0.64 inches thick. it is made of noryl gtx with partial steel liners. it weights in at 3.76 ounces. lets get to the pros of this knife. it is a very light weight knife for its size and has very good ergonomics. this knfe has benchmades axis lock which i have found is an amazing lock that has never failed on me. the 154cm blade is awesome it came razor sharp out of box and is still very sharp. it has stood up to all of the tasks i have put it to and it still is. i have cut up many boxes into 200 or so tiny pieces and the lock up is still rock solid. it is very smooth and the thumb hole is very easy to use. the jimping is great and it is all over the knife, the jimping on the thumb ramp really gives you alot of control. now we wil get to the cons startingwith the clip on mine is a little tilted up so when i tap on it it makes a loud click. the coating on the blade is starting to fade in certain places and i have chips in my blade from trying to cut a ziptie(my fault and i didnt know it was a ziptie until it was to late). the thumb hole is covered little bit by the handle but it doesnt get in the way of trying to open it though.
overall this knife is amazing and i would recommend this to anyone willing to spend money on a knife. this is my edc and has been sense i got it. it took the place of my previous edc the kershaw leek which i have a review of so go check it out. thanks for reading and have a good day

I am a fan of the modified sheepsfoot Griptillians. I find the handles comfy, the lock is nice, the action smooth, the steel (154CM in mine) took and held a very sharp edge, and I'm moving toward an opening hole vs. thumb stud. I won't say I don't like the drop point versions, but given the choice, I'd go with the 550HG every time. Oh, and large for me. The small versions felt odd to me, and the large were about the max I can comfortably carry.

wait you chipped the blade by cutting a plastic ziptie??? That woul be a very defective blade!

I currently own an older Griptilian that has a 440C blade as well as a Cabela's mini Grip with a D2 blade. I can't say that I've ever had issues with any of them, aside from needing to tighten the pivot screw occasionally. As far as I'm concerned, it's about as a perfect an EDC knife as you can get.

No, not really. It's generally considered to be poor practice to cut zip ties with a knife. I myself carry a small pair of Klein dykes in my EDC bag specifically to cut zip ties. My girlfriend used to cut zip ties with her Delica and it chipped out the blade. Repeatedly. So, I got her a set of Klein's, too. No more chipping out of the blade (Spyderco Delica in VG-10).

I cut zip ties all the time with my knives and have never had a problem... just dont twist the knife, keep it straight and there shouldnt be an issue

What C-Dog said. Even a thin edge should handle a zip tie with no prob, if a cutting motion is used. Its the lateral or prying motion that can jack up the edge.

Not that anyone cares, but I too am waiting on a sheepsfoot/spydie hole Griptilian. For me, a primary selling point of the large Griptilian is the hand-filling shape of the scales. Skinny scales and short blades have their upside too, but when it gets down to cutting, nothing beats scales on which you can get a good grip.
