How does the axis lock work on a benchmade griptilian 551?

When you open the blade does it lock it self or do I hafe to lock it manualy?

Anybody have this knife and if so how do you like it?

Im leaning towards the one with the, drop point, plain edge blade.

It locks itself. Go to the Benchmade website, www.benchmade.com , and click on "About Us" on the top menu, then click on "innovative mechanisms" and you can see drawings and details on the axis lock.

I've got a "few" Griptilians :D and they are hard to beat as just a great modern everyday work knife.

I got my FIRST one earlier this week. I really don't care for synthetic handles, and I don't carry knives that large, but I have to say, I love it. Although synthetic, the handle still looks good, and it carries SO comfortably in your pocket with the clip that you don't even know that it's there. I love it and it has currently replaced my Buck Alpha dorado as my EDC. I got the same one that you are thinking of buying, black scales, plain blade. Just make sure you get one with 154cpm blade steel and not the 440c. There are a few of the 440's still out there, not that no good, but the 154 is better. Get the Grip, you won't be sorry.

The 551 and Grips in general are great working knives.

Simple, strong, and a good buy for the money. A lot of people complain about the Noryl GTX handles, but I like 'em because they ARE grippy.

IMO with the larger models like this one I remove the clip and carry in either the pocket or in a large Benchmade pouch.

Here are some good yo-tube videos demonstrating the axis lock:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

They're not in English, but you can see what he's doing.

My only complaints with my 551 Grip are that the blade is thicker than I like for slicing, and that the stop pin rattles from side to side when the knife is closed. Apparently this is not uncommon. Nevertheless, the knife looks and feels overall like a solid, heavy-use knife.

The 551 is a great knife and the axis is a great lock. It was one of my first quality pocket knives. I think you'll be happy with it.

I own the 551 and its my favorite benchmade i have owned....
Nothing but quality and a super strong lock here...

Have you missed something during the last few years?:)
