I sharpen my own. It is possible to over sharpen the tip making it appear blunted; especially with a powered sharpening tool, i.e. Wheel, belt, etc. I would say it is not "normal", but can happen.

If anything the tip is stronger now because it is thicker across the width. You will likely necer k ow the difference in use.

Its your call from here. I think it would be a tough case to bring up with Benchmade. I suspect the length is still within manufactruing tolerance or specification.

well i just checked with a measuring tape and the blade length is fraction of a millimetre short of 3.45mm or maybe its measuring error.

is this much wear normal in factory sharpening?

the good thing is that they removed some scratches on the blade

It's totally fine. Put it in your pocket.

Happy Thanksgiving to all..! These are hand sharpened and so we'll find fluctuations like on your Grip. I just got my 551 back from service and the tip looks the same. On the other side, it slices like crazy! Just use it!

That's the main reason it's safer to learn how to hand sharpen cause one slip of the hand on a machine and edge can be altered. I would suggest spyderco triangle sharpener. Not very expensive but very effective with a little practice. Just my opinions! Happy Thanksgiving

Just practice and learn to sharpen your own knives. Not in a million yrs would i ever let some random at a knife factory re-sharpen my knives on a belt, say goodbye to a nice chunk of steel if you do.

one question...does this loss of few mm of steel decrease knifes performance?

to answer others..well sharpening a 154CM steel aint easy for newbies like me

been practicing on cheaper steels but its challenging on hard steels as u dont notice progress in 4-5 strokes

What are you sharpening with? I can give you a couple of suggestions to make things easier. A Spyderco sharp maker with the addition of the diamond or cbn rods will do the trick in most cases with a 154cm.

Everyone is different. I started out with a couple guided systems (tried the Edge Pro Apex and DMT Magna Guide) and quickly became frustrated.
- the DMT's "Presets" never truly lined up with the stock knife angle, so re-profiling always seemed unavoidable
- Edge Pro Apex, I just found myself fighting to consistently hit the apex (not a fault to the system, more so to my own "laziness" and lack of desire to really master the system)

I much prefer using whetstones and leather strops. I found it to be easier than the guided systems. I use 1k, 4k, and 6k stones, alone with a cheap leather strop.

If it were my knife, I wouldn't worry about it for another minute. But I use my knives and sharpen them when needed. I've rounded a few tips along the way learning how to sharpen.

hi guys..

just wanted to update so Benchmade customer service does not get bad rep....i think it was just placebo effect and i was reading too much into it.

heard back from Benchmade lifesharp and they actually replaced my entire blade as it had some edge rolling issues. as i have bit of ocd...the blade being slightly shorter than handle was the thing that was really bothering me.
very silly of me but atleast now my knife is keeping a very good edge after weeks of use.

So, you sent it in for sharpening and got a new blade instead. For free. Nice! Yeah, it's your OCD kicking in. Your knife is fine. It is also possible for it to be a couple mm short. We're talking millimeters. Tiny bits. If you keep the knife long enough and sharpen it enough yourself, you will shorten it a few millimeters. That's how sharpening works: taking away steel.
