This is related to a thread I started on a similar topic about griptilian handles. Keyman mentioned that he put jb weld or something in his griptilian scales to make them feel more solid, and now I have to try it. What I am thinking is putting in a layer of epoxy in the scales, then a layer of led shot, then another layer of epoxy. Has anyone else done something similar to this? How does this idea sound? By the way to all those who recommend buying scales I don't have that kind of money, and would rather do it by myself anyway, although some custom scales are quite tempting.

That doesn't sound like too bad of an idea actually. If I were you though I'd make sure to really carefully consider how much weight you're adding. Maybe experiment with a few different amounts of shot before epoxying so you can really dial in what you want before it's permanent.

Sounds like it would add a lot of weight. One the main reasons I love the Grip is that it's so light weight, yet very strong,

I sat down for about 8 hours straight and did this. I added the epoxy and then had to chisel some out so the scales are flush. It is a step up in my opinion, as it added a little weight but didn't solve the hollow sound when you open it. I will try adding more epoxy. I left out the shot because it was too big. I agree that it is a strong knife it just doesn't feel that way to me, which is why i tried this. So far it is still not a knife I would carry due to the cheep feeling, so I had no problem using it as my test subject. I will try adding more epoxy soon.

Also do you guys think it is a good idea to mix sand into the epoxy to make it more dense? I don't care about weight that much.

If you use caulking and you don't like what you have done; you can always cut it out and try again.
If you use epoxy, it's pretty much forever.

yeah I spent 8 hours carving out epoxy so that the scales will fit together. Too impatient and lazy to buy caulking. Keyman did you have similar results or did it turn out better than mine?

I'm going to try this now with some silicone gel - hoping it won't stick. I'll go buy some stainless steel shot, so I can really balance the weight how I'd like, while using premium materials xD Silicone should be fairly removable too.

Has anyone though about doing this to the interior cavities of the scales, just so that water can't stay in there?

When I originally did this I used commercial windsheild caulking (silicone) only.
I filled in the interior cavities of the scales.
No lead shot, just silicone....and yes PAPA SMURF I'm sorry to say mine probably did come out better.....because I have never removed it.
It worked excellently.
Just pay close attention to where and how the liners will fit into the handles while you are doing this.
I used the windsheild caulking simply because it was black.
