Hey guys im thinking about getting the benchmade mini griptilian with 2.95 inch D2 blade from cabelas $ 89.00 or the mcusta mc 1 with 3 inch vg 10 blade for $89.00 or with the vg 10 damascus for $ 114.00. What are your opinions ? To me the benchmade is more of a utility piece and the mcusta is more of a fine gentlemans blade. In actual use i probably use pocket knives the most for cutting things that i buy out of those pesky plastic bubble packages. so if this makes any difference.

Get the mini grip in M390 LE. Same price and a great knife. I love the mini grips.

Tough call. They're so totally different though, it just depends on what you want.

Honestly, the Mcusta is probably the better knife, but there's just something about the minigrip that makes it so perfect. Virtually every knife collector has owned one. I've had three myself.

But if I were to buy a Griptilian or minigrip, I'd take the base steel version. I had a D2 minigrip and it was great, but the black coating kind of sucked. Faded after cutting through boxes even. The minigrip is really only value-competitive at its 55-60 dollar entry level anyway. Even other Benchmades start outperforming it after $80.

Thanks for the advices guys. I forgot but what about the axis lock? i heard its real strong. The mcusta has the walker liner locks? Anyone have any experience with the mcustas with this style locks? . Martial i assume the base steel your talking about is the 154 CM? And can u tell me where i can snag some mini grips for 55 to 60 bucks because cabelas and bass pro has them for 89 to 99 bucks. More Advice is welcomed from all.

i am a non-comital type, so why not both? no seriously, two different beasts, so is there one of them you just love?.

The Cabela's model is the D2 steel, which has better edge holding (but less rust resistance) than the base model's 154CM. Actually, the original base steel was 440C, but I think those are pretty much gone from the market now.

The axis lock is excellent. Not only is it extremely strong, but it's fun to use and offers a better action when opening and closing the knife.

There's nothing wrong with a good liner lock, but even the best liner lock will be outperformed by any given axis lock.

I just glanced at the prices and they seem to have gone up substantially for minigrips. Seems like they start at 65ish now:

Honestly, for less money you can get the superior Kershaw RAM. The minigrip has obtained legendary status over the years though, so it might just be something every knife collector has to experience.
