Benchmade Griptilian vs. SOG Trident

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I'm new to the forum. I'm looking at getting a new folder and am torn between the Benchmade Griptilian and the SOG Trident. Any preferences either way? Thanks for the help!

Griptilian. The SOG Trident is a decent knife, I own one, however I must say the Benchmade is of a bit higher quality than the Trident. 154CM holds a bit more of an edge than AUS-8, and the Axis lock works a lot better on the Grip than the other Axis-type lock does on the Trident. The Trident can also get quite a bit of blade play, however tightening the pivot screw and applying some loctite should fix the problem. The Griptilian experiences none of these problems, plus it comes with the Benchmade LifeSharp warranty, so if there is anything wrong with it out of the box you can send it back to Benchmade and they'll fix it for you.

Hope this helped,

-Rainer

Definitely a Grip over any SOG folder.

Owned a Flash and still own a Twitch. A Griptillian is definitely superior in fit, finish, materials, and design.

Benchmade wins in every way. Quality of materials, construction, and customer service.

Well, I recently bought a Benchmade 551SBKSN (Serrated Black Blade Sand Handled) Griptilian. It is a great knife and will last a long time. So, Benchmade all the way. Welcome to the Forums by the way!:)
Pros: Blade Steel (154CM)
Handle Construction (Valox)
Construction (Heavy Duty, can take a punishment, but is light)
Blade Geometry is fantastic
Factory Sharp Blade/Serrations
Made In USA

Cons: NONE

Here is a picture of the one I have (Courtesy of Google)

I just bought a trident about a week and a half ago. The knife looked really cool. Dessert camo handle and a golden finish on the blade. However the thing sucked, I could not put a great edge on it. Also the blade play was quite difficult to get rid of. The knife went back the very next day.
The Griptilian was cheaper for me as well as better quality. Trust me you will not be disappointed with the grip.

The SOG Trident is a really cool looking knife. It is in fact among my top 5 favorite folding knife designs ever. I just wish SOG would improve the quality of their folders.

I owned a grip to and the fit and finish were outstanding. If it's just plain coolness that you are looking for buy a tiger striped Trident. If you want a knife that will take on any cutting task you give it get the Benchmade.

Sounds like I know what to get (the Grip if that's not clear from all the posts). Any suggestions as to which model? I'm a fan of straight edge but see the serrated versions much more in stores. Any benefit to this? I always feel like it it just makes it harder to sharpen.

Yeah, I am a plain edge guy... Never been a fan of serrations... Stick with plain!

i personally would go with a serrated edge. heard it somewhere here in the forums "better to have serrations and not need them, then have need them and not have them." if you get the full sized grip, you will have plenty of cutting edge beyond the serrations to get 9/10 jobs done. the 1/10 will require you to use the serrations. now, as far as blade play goes, with what everyone is saying about that, i have noticed in both of my grips, both a full sized and the mini, that i get a very small amount of side to side wobble. if i tighten it too much, the blade won't flip out. anyway, good luck, and i hope you enjoy your Benchmade!

I vote for the Benchmade, too. I think they are better in every way possible. I do own a Trident, and like it, but it's relegated to a backup of sorts, and my Benchmades get carried and used daily.

I got the serrated Benchmade 551 because I've always been a serrated guy, and I have the stuff to sharpen serrations, and I think they're more useful. But, go with what you like, if you like the pain edge with no coating, get that, if you like a serrated black, get that. I've also noticed my Benchmade has a sweet spot that it stays at, so the blade comes out smoothly and there is no play (The factory set it there).

If its a toy or novelty your after, maybe the SOG is the way to go. If you want a hard-working, quality tool that will last a lifetime and give you some real enjoyment and pride of ownership, there is only one answer for this question. GET THE BENCHMADE

I've had both. While I didn't dislike the tident folder, I did gift it out. I'm currently carrying a Benchmade Grip and B.M. Rift. I do like them better.
