I can get a Grippy with 440C steel and BK1 coating for $65 out the door. The Cabelas version with D2 steel will run me $90. Is it worth the $25 to get the D2 steel? Thanks for your thoughts.

What do you want? Sharpenability? Corrosion resistance? Edge retention? Affordability?

What environments will you be working in? What activities will the knife be involved in? How are you knife maintenance skills?

WORTH IT!! My $.02; got one for Christmas, and I believe it's by far the best knife I've ever gotten. 'Course I've only been carrying it a week but it's still outstandingly ( ) SPECTACULAR!!!!

And maybe it's just the one I've got, but it's EASY to sharpen; I knocked the edge off on purpose just to see. Couple swipes on a ceramic hone and I was even sharper then when it was just out of the box. MARVELOUS buy!!

What I want is a quality blade. I honestly do not know many of the differences between the two steels as I am somewhat new to knives. So to answer your questions: Yes, I want something that will stay sharp and retain its edge. I also want something that will be resistant to corrosion, but it will not be exposed that often to sweat or water. And, I do not really know all that much about knife maintenance. However, I will keep it oiled and wiped - I tend to obsess over taking care of my stuff. The knife will stay clipped to the interior of my pocket 99% of the time. It will be used only occasionally for cutting boxes or something similar (but not too often at all). It will also be there in the event that it is needed for self defense. Thanks for any help.

I'd say go for the D2. mine just arrived yesterday. came sharper than me 440c mini grip did. I'd probably say to get the Plain edge though instead of the serrated.

Why plain over serrated?

I was going to get one of the 440 variety, but now that I know of the d2 version Ill be getting one of those. The closest cabelas is 130 miles away, can I get it out of a catalouge? You can get one with a S30V blade from Doug Ritters survival web site. Its around 100$.I want one of those also. One in d2 and one in S30V,now that would be a nice pair. All three would be ok also.To me an upgrade in steel is worth it,but the 440 may be easier for you to sharpen if your sharpening skills are like mine and leave a little to be desired. But I buy good steel with the hopes of getting better in the future. From what I gather from all the reading I can get my hands on about knives the grippers are (any of them)one of the better knife/quality/price deals out there.
