I recieved this in the mail today. I bought this one for myself mostly because of a few questions already about it but also because in my eyes its an updated pocket clip equipped, lighter weight, one hand opening and closing Buck 110 type folder only with an Axis lock to take it above and beyond.

Anyway, I've been asked a few times already about replacement scales on these to rid the knives of the skull logo they have engraved in there. Turns out the clip has a skull logo with Harley Davidson below that as well. Some want the writing on the blades blasted off as well as the skulls removed and I can't say as I blame them for that but the skulls have been the main topic of discussion and concern for more than a couple guys now.

Anyway, I already had one thread started on this by one of those asking about it but in an effort to make things easier to find later, because these things tend to be asked again and again I figured I'd make a before and after thread new to have up for future questions.

Seen here you can see the clip before and after, as well as the scales before and after. On the clip, the logo is still there but it is now very very faint. No amount of blasting could remove it completely from the factory clip but I do believe you can get a regular BM clip for any knife with the same hole pattern and have BM ship that to you. If not a replacement is certainly an easy option. Based on this I can second guess that the blade writing will be much the same guys. I may be wrong but past experience shows me that its probably going to be the case. Best to hope for until I do one is to expect it to be faint but not totally gone.

On the scales: Well it would be possible to make new ones although a lot of work and sanding G10 to shape which I hate doing, so on my folder I opted to just remove the skulls by a fine drum and a variable speed dremmel. The skull emblems are not engraved very deep at all on the G10 scales. I was able to remove them in short order and simply sanded over the scales by hand with some 400 grit emory cloth followed by 600 grit emory and then off to the bead blast cabinet and that cleaned them up quite nicely. How they fit on the handle was not changed at all.

Hope this answers your questions.

I got mine at knifecenter. I'm sure others have it but its the only one I could find. Looks like I got a deal too because they've changed the price by quite a bit compared to what I paid. Wow! I love when that happens. I'd have passed if I had to pay $200 I can tell ya that! I won't even tell you what I paid. I made out though I'll tell ya that! :) They said the satin blade model will be in anytime. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BM13150

Nice job with the clip and scales.

How is the heft of the knife? Does is feel pretty solid?

I have been wanting one of those ever since I first seen pics. I love it with the skulls in the handle and on the clip. I think it looks great with them. The only thing I would change if I got one is to remove the harley davidson name off the blade..

Its a nice folder. Expensive but nice. Not sure for what you get that its worth the cost personally but I guess you pay for the Harley name to some extent. Its one I'll keep. Personally the skulls were not me so much. I don't mind the small one on the clip but on both sides of the scales I thought it was a bit much. I prefer the faint skull on the clip with Harley Davidson under it and the ones on the scales wiped off. Bead blasting the G10 gave the scales a bit more grippy texture too so that was also nice.

I've already scratched the blade so the coating is not too tough. I suspect before long I'll have pics of the bead blasted blade once I scratch it up more.

How much did it cost ya?, I couldnt find anywhere that was actually selling them yet. Although I havent looked for about 2 weeks.

I got it shipped for less than I was supposed to. Didn't know it at the time though. If I had I may have ordered two. :D Just kidding. Actually I offered it back to them when I realized the error on the price and they said it was their bad and to enjoy it.

According to knifecenter I got it for less than their cost because they sold me the black blade model for the same price as the satin blade model. Apparently the black blade is more expensive by a few bucks. I originally ordered the satin model and they had to call to let me know they didn't have it but they did have the black blade model. I told them I'd take it at the same price, which is what they offered.

I like the folder. I'll say this though, its very slick. In the cold its a bit hard to get what I feel is a good grip on it. I wish the handle had some texture to it.

I just went to there website. HOLY CRAP thats alot to pay for that knife:eek:. Looks like I wont be getting one anytime soon.

Anyway off topic. STR do you stonewash blade?. Something like a small neck knife?.
Thanks..

You do awesome work by the way.

That is a nice instrument.

In UK, there is a sky-high increase in knife crime. The "pansies" in Parliament, in their "wisdom", have come up with more knee-jerk legislation, instead of banging down hard on offenders. It's now illegal to carry any kind of knife in the UK. Especially so folding-lock knives.
Of course, I keep running across lawful situations when a sharp knife would be real useful. Sod's Law! :grumpy:

Thanks for the compliments. On your question, I don't know anyone that does that finish other than Chris Reeves and I doubt he'd do it for folks that asked. There are probably others members of BFs that do this but I don't know any of them unfortunately. Well, I may but I don't know who does it and who doesn't. Sorry.

In an effort to find something to do to get me in the mood to get my butt to the shop today I started out with this. Didn't work to stir my mood much but it did work well for the intended purpose. I found after removing the skull that the handle was a bit slick and hard to get moving to remove from the pocket when I needed the folder. The idea struck me to do it this way from the slots in the pocket clip which are very similarly spaced so I measured those, cut my new ones after mounting the scale in a block of scrap micarta and the end result is just the right amount of grippy texture from the slots to give my thumb a good purchase of the handle to get the folder out now with ease. I figured it was worth a post on it. Also, I figure that with use these will begin to darken and match up to the rest of the scale here soon making it hard to see them later so now is the best time to scan it. At least it shows I got somethin' done today besides eating! :)

Hi Steve. I read your posts on the Mini Hardtail and do you think this is a good EDC? I am interested in my EDC to be a good slicer and to be slim in profile for a carry knife. Maybe do a little whittling. I detest thick bladed and thick body clunky knives and just wanted your opinion. It looks like GP Knives has the best prices on them.

I like it a whole lot RK. Its a really nice little folder. I'm hoping to snag a big brother to this one later one when I can justify the expense.

When I first saw it the design screamed modern day Buck 110 to me and it is done with similar lines although it's light weight with other upgrades is different as well as the company making it. This is the 110/112 everyone has wanted for years. D2 is a fave steel of mine so that didn't hurt one bit.

Yes it slices extremely well. My best friend wanted to see this one so I let him handle it and its in his possession now for a few days to play with it. I must say it was hard to let it go. I've been carrying it since it arrived here. With the additional changes I made I managed to get it so it suits my personality better. The skulls all over it really bothered me personally and had to go. I don't mind the writing on the blade too much since most have that anyways. Just not me with those skulls though.. I can live with the clip skull being faint now since blasting it but I figure eventually I'll make a new one either in a low rider or a standard style with better retention. BenchMade's clips don't stay put very well and they bend super easy so I want something a little more reliable.

You can definitely whittle away with one of these my friend. Been there done that many times so far. Its a great little folder and I highly recommend one. I always buy two of every folder I find that I love and I figure eventually I'll have two of at least the mini version of the HardTail and probably one of the larger unless I like it that much also.
