I picked up this HK Ghost recently. Anyone know what the steel is?

I know it's an inexpensive knife but curious just the same. I'm guessing it's 7,8,or 9CrXXMov? but really have no idea.

Thanks!

Not a BM made HK asnd most likely a fake. San Ren Mu 7045 has the same handle.

It is not a fake.

The HK 14135SBT-1001 3.5 Ghost was a Big 5 exclusive a few years back.

I had Benchmade customer service authenticate it. I forgot to inquire about the steel and was curious. I'd have called them to ask but it's the weekend so I thought I'd ask here.

Thanks though.

Edited to add: Here's an old discussion of it the BKC forum.

Big 5 does have one off HKs made in China. Obviously made by SRM. I bought a Flak and an Espionage. OK for cheap knives I bought for $14.99. No steel markings or info doesnt hold a great edge. Pretty much a trunk of the car knife.
No sure why BM/HK cheapen themselves making these Big 5 specials.

I guess for the same reason Kai brands knives with 3Cr steel and Spyderco has it's budget line. There's a market for it. I think as knife "enthusiasts" we sometimes forget the general public isn't willing to spend the kind of money we are for a quality, high end knife. $30 probably already exceeds the threshold for most "just" for a knife.

I'm with you though. These knives are low end, budget knives that you really shouldn't expect all that much from. For me the value is kinda like filling that missing spot in the sticker book if you know what I mean. I like to collect the brand and that's about it. Not to mention they do make ok gifts from time to time lol.

I'll call Monday and see what they say. I'm guessing it's one of the alphabet steels. Although I have to say, If properly heat treated some of these lesser steels can perform surprisingly well. Benchmade's 9Cr14MOV used in the HK Ascender has really impressed me but I keep my expectations realistic with these budgets knives.

Anyway, thanks for looking into it. I do appreciate it!

By the way, the Flak and Espionage are 8Cr13MOV. I got a couple awhile back and asked BM what the steel was.
