How much of the top of the rear of the blade does the AXIS bar cover on your HK14205 folder when it is open? Is it normal to have the center of the bottom of the AXIS bar right at the end of the top of the rear of the blade?

Yep, that sound about normal. I've always wondered why they keep the contact area so close the the end of the tang. It would seem like they could allow the bar to go up at least a little further. However, that being the case, Axis lock failures don't seem to be all that often. So I figure, it must not be that bad of an issue.

Yours seems good and you chose a great knife.

My 14205 and my 14210 are both like that. The lock bar doesn't travel very far onto the blade ramp, but neither has ever given me any problem.

What I have noticed is that the AXIS locks on these H&Ks have a longer pull than any of my other AXIS locks. That's neither here nor there as far as the OP's question... just an observation.

I agree- normal. The bar starts at the end, giving the axis plenty of room to "wear". Pull the bar back with the knife open (hold the blade so it doesn't close!) and you'll see how the blade ramp makes a nice taper, giving plenty of room for future wear.

I think this is related to the fact that there are auto versions (14905) of this knife. The 520/5000 series has the long pull too.

Short lockbar travel also makes it easier to use quickly, for those who like to flick their knives open and closed.

Hold the blade in your left hand (blade towards you) and the handle in your right hand. How much of the rear of the blade is the AXIS bar covering when you look at it inside the handle from an angle from the right? It looks like my AXIS bar is barely covering any of the rear of the blade. Is this normal? The knife looks alright from the top view but from the bottom at an angle it looks sketchy.

Again, yes, that sounds normal.

Over time, the axis bar will work it's way further up the tang. I think they do that to allow room to prevent vertical blade play. Notice how there's still room in the slot to allow the axis bar to move forward, but it stops short of reaching the end. That's a good thing IMO.

Mlot51 and Kaizen1, I'm glad you guys mentioned something about the AXIS bar having extra room in the handle slots for future movement when the tang wears over time. That makes sense and is a well thought out design, in my opinion. Did you guys also think that the HK14205 was one of the coolest designs when you bought it? I think this knife is my favourite folder. Benchmade and HK are great companies. I'm glad Benchmade produced an HK line.

My favorite BMs are the Rukus, the 960 and the 14000 series HK knives. Never bought the 14205, though I always want to. I just keep spending my extra cash on Spydercos...
