Since Benchmade once upon a time borrowed the round opening hole, what do you think the chances are of them letting Spyderco use the Axis lock?
Of course, that might not be the best idea, cuz an Axis lock Military would be the last knife I ever bought from anyone. (well.....maybe:) )

Oh man, an axis lock Military would be awesome!

I like the compression lock better. A Miltary 2 with a comp lock would be much more desireable to me than say, a basically revised 806.

I’d like to see the axis lock on the upcoming Tuff or the Manix/Mini-Manix. I have a feeling the axis lock is a little stronger than the compression lock, so I’d definitely want it on the Tuff.

The axis lock is cool, but I'm pretty happy with the BB lock and compression lock which are already available.

Neither of those is available on the Military! :(

It would be interesting to see two of the U.S.'s premium knife companies get together on a collaboration.

Not the Military, but perhaps combine the Military blade with the 806 handle (the two strongest attributes of these two knives, IMHO).

Oh, I wasn't speaking to any knife in particular, but honestly, I'd rather have a compression lock military than an axis lock one, although either would be fine. I really don't see a void in Spyderco's lock lineup. They have a diverse list of tough locks, although it'd be nice to see more framelocks, as they're constantly growing on me.

If it makes any difference, one of the main reasons I bought the para instead of the military was the compression lock.

Not for me thanks. While I admire the Axis lock, I also respect the differences. In my mind Benchmade and Spyderco are two very distinct companies with very different philosophies. Spyderco has great locks and most of them are as good as the Axis IMHO (BB, Compression, frame and even the good old lockback, which Spyderco probably does better than anyone).

If all makers get together and collaborate all the time, we'll end up with 1 knife that will try to please everyone. My guess is that it would be a very bland knife indeed.

The knife industry is evolving rapidly these days, and I believe that it's in part due to many makers exploring every nook and cranny to find the best solutions. I'd like to keep it that way.

Take care!

Hi Vinny.

We're working on possible Military combinations now. I will say that the BB lock with Eric's new ball bearing holder that we're developing for the P'kal is quite interesting.

Hi Joshua, the Compression lock has shown that we can make it as strong as we care to. I believe that once that lock evolves a bit more, it will be exceptional for its strength and simplicity.

Hi Sifu, I think "non" is more realistic than "slim". Benchmade has never exhibited any interest in sharing their Axis lock. At this time, I think it's moot as our newer developing locks (Compression, Ball Bearing and Stop Lock) are showing promise.

We did create a couple of locks that "loophole" the Axis patent, just to see if we could. We wouldn't make them in production, but it helped our understanding.

We also license custom makers to use out patented locks. It helps them and it helps us. The new Howard Viele "Phoenix" design is a result of that sharing.

I fell in love with the Axis lock some time ago, and couldn't resist the 550 Griptilian because it gave me the Spyderhole and the Axis in the same knife! That said, I'm encouraged to hear about the progress with the BB and compression locks. The day Spyderco comes up with a lock that is as smooth and easy to close one-handed as the Axis will be a very happy day for me.

I think an Axis lock Paramilitary that carried tip up would rule. :)

I however am currently so happy with my Paramilitary that I don't know that I would change anything at all. It's one sweet knife as is.

"...the BB lock with Eric's new ball bearing holder that we're developing for the P'kal..." could be "The day Spyderco comes up with a lock that is as smooth and easy to close one-handed as the Axis..."
