Benchmade in my Crosshairs-Take 2

A few months ago, I decided I wanted to give Benchmade some serious consideration when looking for a new knife. I had stated Benchmade offered many of the features I viewed as important in a pocket knife(good materials/ambidextrous/great edge to handle ratios), so I picked up a 555 and followed that up with 940. Well, old habits die hard and I found myself wanting one of my default knives and ended up selling my Benchmades and came to the conclusion they just weren't for me. The thing is, I keep on coming back to check the Benchmade Forum because there's just so many models, both current and discontinued, that really have my interest. I owned a 707 years ago and it checked off pretty much every box on my list for a compact EDC.

Perhaps it's time for another go?

The 707 is a cool little knife. If you would like to try something different and a bit more substantial, I highly recommend the 484 Nakamura. Still a smaller package like the 707 but with a bit more handle, and a much more satisfying weight and width.

Still, If I were to possess only one Benchmade knife, it would probably be the 940. Such a versatile folder.

Best of luck in your quest

jazub,

I was actually checking out the 484 earlier this morning. How are the finger grooves on the handle?

hatchettjack,

The 810 might be a bit more than I'm used to, but it's sweet looking beast!

I'm not trying to answer for jaz, but I had the same question awhile back.
I have fairly big hands and wondered if they would be comfortable, so one day I looked at the CF version at a local store...
I was very surprised. It fit my hands very nicely. The overall length is very close to my favorite, the Mini Grip, and with the extra thickness, it really gives the knife a substantial feel. I plan on getting one someday, if I can quit buying Mini Grips long enough :D

Yeah, as 338375 mentioned, it is surprisingly more substantial than the handle length dimension would convey. I don't have big hands but the 707 is smaller than I will carry outside of the house. I believe the grooves and stoutness of the 484 really optimize the handle. Also, the weight of it makes it feel great.

The 484 is my favorite small knife to date. Hope that the pics help some.

I love the blade on the 707, but the handle is a bit awkward. Ok for light EDC tasks, but for me, I wouldn't want to use it for a bunch of cardboard processing.

I like my 707, though it's about the smallest folder in my rotation.
The 484 gets carried a lot more than the 707, the finger grooves of the handle fit my medium size hands just right, and it does feel more substantial and capable. And the jimped thumb ramp on it is awesome. I definitely prefer the 484 to the 707, although the light 707 has its place and uses.

The 950 Rift remains one of my favourite BMs. There have been times it's been left uncarried for a while, languishing in the drawer while other new folders are in pocket. Then I pick it up again and remember just how good it is. Again, the bump in the 950 handle fits my hand size just right, whereas others find it in the way of fingers when gripping. I would not part with my Rift, awesome pocket tool.

Cursum Perficio, those pictures open my eyes to the Mini Barrage for the first time.
Looks like a great size pocket knife. I have never loved assisted openers but that one looks interesting.

The 586 is an excellent knife!

The mini Barrage is outstanding, I've got a mini Warn model that I tried to list but couldn't.

It's a basically ideal sub-3" folder, like the 525 mini Presidio and any number of other 'mini' Benchmades.

I've got a 707 listed here at the moment, if you're interested. The mini Warn and bills got the better of it.

Thanks, I'm quite attached to the 586, it's a real handy size, it feels very good in hand to me and M390 is a great stainless.
I have considered de-assisting it but haven't done so. From what I've read it's easy to de-assist but a bear to put back. Also I have other non-AO Axis lock folders to enjoy and I personally don't mind AO.
I have thought about getting another 586 to de-assist but it's risky getting AO's past Customs, even though AO's are legal over here.
