Benchmade in my Crosshairs

I decided to try a little experiment with my most recent purchase. Rather than simply going to one of my default companies of choice(CRK/Spyderco), I tried to actually find a knife that checked off the most boxes for what I consider important. I came to the conclusion I wanted a fully ambidextrous knife that packed a considerable amount of cutting edge relative to the overall length of the knife. This eliminated frame locks and knives with big finger choils right off the go, but left me checking out Benchmade big time. It was almost like a Eureka! moment of sorts, because, all of a sudden, there were countless knives I never really considered in the past. I settled on a 555 plain edge and am waiting for G10 scales to arrive any day now.

Now, it's just a matter of what comes next?!?

Real good choice

I guess you could go for custom pocket clips for your mini-grip :D

That's wise. My default company of choice is Benchmade but I'm so glad I branched into Spyderco. Sometimes these companies are judged against each other, but IMO they complement one another.

(If you haven't already, check out the 940/940-1 and/or 710 for good cutting edge-to-overall length ratios.)

940 or bust. I have the 943, 940, and 940-1. I'm waiting on G10 scales as well for the 940.

The 940 and 710 are both on the radar, for sure. To be honest, the looks of the 940 don't quite do it for me, but it has a huge following from what I've read. That has to count for something.

Look to the 943 if the blade design of the 940 bugs you. It's equally great and a better slicer.

Great choice to start! You have opened up a big door with lots of great options with Benchmade Knives! have fun with it!

Just got some aftermarket G10 scales in the mail today. I'm lovin the look and feel[emoji106]ImageUploadedByTapatalk1435617542.176200.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1435617567.544900.jpg

While on vacation, I dropped into a knife store that had a number of Benchmades and was able to trade my way into a 940. Even though I'm still not really a fan of the blade shape, my initial impressions are quite positive. It's pretty much what I consider the perfect EDC size with a pile of cutting edge relative to the overall length. I get the impression the knife could win me over with time spent using it, rather than simply on looks.

I'm kind of in the same boat..other brands would get my attention foremost, but once I had a 940-1 I started looking harder at Benchmade. Now I have a 761 too.. I'm liking them both a lot.

I just picked up my first benchmade off the forums here, also a 556 plain edge. It's great! Action is super smooth, lock up is tight and the axis lock is a lot of fun.

The 930 Kulgera has 0.2" more blade in the same size handle as the 940. One of my favorites. Though it's discontinued and doesn't appear in the wild very often.

Well, it looks like the experiment dabbling in Benchmade has run its course and I've come to the conclusion they just aren't for me. On paper they make plenty of sense for me, as their features are well aligned with my preferences, but there's something that just doesn't keep me wanting to carry them. I guess I simply identify more with a couple other brands more.

It was worth the try, though.

Care to elaborate "something"? I'm curious. Benchmade's axis lock is unique, and so are the blade geometries. They also manufacture some of the slimmest production knives (943 comes to mind), and yes pack a substantial amount of blade.

Of course they don't click with everyone, but I'm also glad there is plenty of choice! :-)
