Benchmade Kulgera: Another modern classic in the making?

I know a lot of people say the BM710 is a modern classic, and judging by what I've been reading about the Kulgera here, everyone loves this knife as well.

I'm already getting an itch to buy yet another knife (I don't even use them that much, but I can't help myself) and I was looking at either the Kulgera or the 960. I like them both but I prefer G10 handles, and the blue handle on the Kulgera looks very nice.

Since this is a relatively new knife I know it some people may not have a solid opinion about it yet, but would you go with the 960 or the 930? It won't get heavy use at all, more of just a "in case I need it" knife.

I guess I really am a Benchmade guy. So many of their knives appeal to me.

The action of the knife on this guy is smooth as silk whether you open it with the thumb studs or the Axis open or a hammer throw. The amount of force required to open the knife is just perfect, not too much and not too little. It makes a nice 'click' on the open similar to the 960, but with the 930, you get more knife. Closing the knife is just as simple and smooth. Just engage the Axis lock and a light flick of the wrist results in a smooth closing.

Got that from the BM forums, sounds promising.

I think that you answered your own question. You like G10, the knife won't be used much... you just want it. I see nothing wrong with that. I handled one a couple of weeks ago and I liked it a lot. I also like the 960 a lot, for different reasons. If I had to choose only one, I would get the 930 because of the G10 and fuller grip.

I don't own either, but I have handled both a 930 and a 960. My vote is with the 930, which I would already have if I weren't on a tight budget this year (the wife's plans have taken care of my finances for the year!)

I got my 930 today. It's a combination of 710 and 943. You get flawless blue and black G-10, which I prefer as a material over anodised 6061. Now I love my 940 and also owned a 943, but with G-10 the knife just keeps its "looks" longer.

The nickel 'plating' (finish) on the metal bits looks nice too, but it will wear some with use I think. Not being a fan of shiny clips, I replaced the plated silver split arrow that came with the 930 with a Parkerized black replacement from my parts stock.

Blade steel on this is S30V and mine came very sharp and was even better after it was stropped. The Axis mechanism is smooth too.

All I can say is Osborne does some great designs, the new 950 Rift is a prime example of what I mean...good stuff.

The 960 is good, true, but I like this knife even better!

I've had a 930 for a couple of months. I realy like the design and the blue/black G10. It's opens smoothly and locks up tightly. I carry it as a "gentleman's" knife when going out to dinner, etc. If it going to be used as a mild use folder, I don't think you could go wrong.

I had one for a while, gave it to my little brother.

I am thinking about getting another one. It looks like you could wear it with a tuxedo, and is smooth and well built.

It even took my little brothers torture pretty well. He was showing his friends how good s30v is, and sliced through a shingle, samurai style. Took a while to get the nicks out of the blade after that, but it is a hell of a knife.

I did find that it sliced my palm sometimes when I flicked it closed. Just barely, but sometimes enough to bleed.

Awesome, just what I wanted to hear. Seems like it'll accompany my 710 nicely. Now I just have to "feel" like spending $125 on it.

Anyone have any good pictures of it? The ones I see are all tiny.

I'm in love with my Kulgera, such a perfect folder! If you like both the 710 and the Osborne, this is a knife for you, can't go wrong with it!

Thanks for the pictures.

Honestly, I'm not too keen on the blade shape, but it is growing on me and I think it'll be my next purchase.

It has a nice long blade to handle ratio
I love that color G10, the design just doesn't speak to me like the Ares did

Alright I got the 930 today and I'll do a quick review since its 2:30am and i've only briefly played with it.

Came very sharp and in the nice pouch and box and is a beautiful knife. This is my first axis-locking knife so I can't compare to any others, but the action is very smooth and I was easily able to flick it back and forth in a few tries. The knife is beautiful and even though it has a 3.6" blade, it has a very slim profile and isn't as big as I thought it would be and fits in my hand very well. My Gerber AR 3.25 gives the illusion of being a bigger knife than this since the 930 has great proportions and sleek lines. Locks up very solid and I'm definitely now interested in getting more axis locks. Great knife and I'd highly recommend it!

I have the 930 as well as a 960 they are both great knives, i like the 930 because it has a heavier blade than the 960. The down side on the 930 is that is thumb studs are almost flush with handle making it harder to flick open at first, but you get used to it. Those are both great knives and its hard to bad one when looking at benchmades

the kulgera looks real nice, let me offer the bm hk axis for your consideration as well, the blade shape is similar. i have the bm hk axis and its one of the best knives i own.

The Kulgera is a good knife, but not in the same class "classic-wise" as the 710 or Griptilian.

I find the design just a bit to "busy", and am about at the point of getting rid of mine.

Just doesn't do it for me.

3mptin, how do you like your 14205? It looks to be a great, solid knife but I dont hear too much about it. I'm tempted to get one
