Benchmade Large Axis Bone Collector

I got my BM Bonecollectors in and I really like 'em. I bought two because they were discontinued... I planned on keeping one as-is and the other... well, we'll see.

The blade came sharp enough to shave arm hair. The D2 stock is fairly stout and the shape is nice; I prefer the 300SN's blade to this one, but I can see this being a nice skinning companion.

The G10 is very grippy, and with the two-tone color scheme is also incredibly attractive. I have noticed however that both pocket *and* removing the knife from the pocket is more difficult that I am accustomed to due how the (relatively) tight pocket clip contacts right in the center of the "rib cage" cutouts in the G10. I think this area should have been left smoother in order to facilitate ease of access.

The handle fills the hand, though I still prefer flat slabs and thinner overall bodies. However, this is a very comfortable and well-contoured handle.

Overall, I am please with this knife. I have been using it as my edc for the past 3 or 4 days now, and will continue to carry it in hopes of giving a thorough long-term review. I plan on revisiting this thread in a month's time to see how it's held up.

I purchased the same knife today in Anchorage as I'm working up here and we stopped @ a knife store on the way back to the hotel. Green and black G-10 handles...this is a substantial knife and my first Benchmade. Love the sharp D2 blade too and I think the pocket clip will smooth up with use. Congrats!

I have carried mine for about a year now. Put it through its paces. It has definitely held up well. It does get easier in time on the pocket. But, even mine is still pretty stiff. Which is good. I don't want to lose an expensive knife. I have cleaned it up sharpened it, and set it aside to rest for awhile. I just picked up a 300sn flipper last week and I'm loving it. Wish it was a little bit longer. But, other then that it is a perfect knife. For me at least.

About a month into mine and gotta say I'm loving it. I didn't know they were discontinued...saw a black one on another forum lightly used for $85 shipped, might have to pick it up as a back up.

J, where did you hear that the BC's were being discontinued? I saw where one of the fixed blade models was discontinued over on BM's forum, but not the folders. I'm pretty sure they were in the 2013 catalog as well.

Regardless, it is a great folder. I've been edc'ing a small green/black for close to a year now. Presidio lines with a hole opener and flat-ground D2, and perfect execution of the Axis -- I love it. Enough so that it booted a small Seb from my pocket.

Yeah, it's in the catalog for 2013 (page 34) and not listed as discontinued on the website.

I don't have access to a catalog and loading the BM website is (unfortunately) painfully slow on my internet connection. I purchased the knife at a reputable on-line retailer and it was listed under their "discontinued" sub-section of Benchmade knives. I could be wrong, I simply took their word for it.

I agree, the lines and overall shape of the knife are very attractive, but I would have either preferred a sharper point on the blade, or a larger belly. I think the 300SN's blade shape with a thumbhole and this handle would be nigh perfect.

without pics, this thread is worthless

Well, if you want to send me a camera here in Afghanistan with which to take pictures, I'll be glad to accept it. The only one I brought with me on this tour was my camera-phone, and it's in about 4 pieces right now... :D

J, by the way, thank you for your service!

I didn't see the black G10 model listed in the 2013 catalog, that coulda been what your dealer meant. At any rate, I think it's great that a warrior is defending us with a Bone Collector in their pocket from time to time. Inspires confidence in my EDC also. :)

Almost too pretty to put in the pocket! One use and you'll have it there frequently. Of course, nothing replaces my most frequent EDC - my 755MPR!

Yeah, I like my Large BC AXIS lock, too - but my Small BC AXIS lock in walnut drew my wife's attention - I had to get her one! Shelikes the skull...

No problem with the D2 rusting here in humid Alabama - should be safe 'over there'.

Thanks for sprucing the thread up, guys. I'm still loving my BC, but I had to sharpen it the other day... managed to nick the blade... D2 is a paaaaain to sharpen. Had to break out the diamond plates.
