Benchmade Lifesharp Service?

I wondered if anyone here would know if Benchmade's Lifesharp Service would be able to take care of a minor problem I've having with my 630BK? I bought it from New Graham when the knife first came out, still have the mint cond box, and bag with the drawstring on it that comes with the knife (and user care manual).

My oldest son has wanted that knife ever since it arrived and I told him that I'd give it to him (after sending it in for service) once he graduates college and he's now in his Senior year.

I used the 630BK as my EDC for a few years (LOVE this knife), its in great shape but I have noticed that if you hold it by the frame (blade facing down) and shake it just a little the blade will fall free from the frame. You can tighten the pivot a bit to keep this from happening but then it's too tight to open easily for use. I assume that this is just from so much use and the fact that its a heavy blade. Does this sound like something that would be taken care of with the Benchmade Lifesharp service?

The Skirmish is one of my favorite production folders and I just want to make it as nice as possible before giving it to my son.

Thanks in advance for in info you may have.

Life Sharp means they sharpen your knife, not fix normal wear and tear. Sounds like the pivot screw needs to be adjusted until a happy medium is found. Sending it in for this would be a waste of time really, it is an issue that you can fix yourself. It really is something that just takes a little time and patience. There is a way to tighten the pivot and make the blade keep it's detent (called sweet spot). Open the blade at 90 degrees to the handle, and tighten the pivot down. A couple drops of oil should also keep thigns lubed up. You may also want to apply some Lock-Tite to the pivot as well. The only other thing I can think of is the detent ball may be worn down and have a flat spot. Give Benchmade a call and see what they recommend.

I assumed that the ball was worn a bit and wasn't sure if that was something they'd replace or not. I never assumed that the Lifesharp Service was anything more than a shaping service that Benchmade provides but I've read some very good feedback on the forums that made me wonder if they did actually do a bit more IF it wasn't too time consuming.

Like I said, its a minor thing, the knife locks up like a vault and has held up extremely well considering how much it has been used.

I agree sounds like the detent ball. Best to get it fixed so an accident doesn't happen. Benchmade has a great warranty department and should take care of it unlike some other popular companies that will not fix "wear and tear."

I don't think companies should fix abuse but something a user can't fix or prevent like a worn detent can be fixed for free or low cost.

I'll be sure to contact them before sending the Skirmish out and if there is a fee (understandable) I'll be happy to pay as I want it to be as nice as possible before handing it over. I wish they hadn't stopped production on this knife as I really like it a lot and used it pretty much every day for a few years.

I wanted to start carrying a smaller EDC and its taken me a LONG time to get use to one but I've finally settled on the Spyderco Sage 2 (great knife) and it's working out really well. Still, I'm going to miss my Skirmish but its nice being able to give it to your son and know that he's going to enjoy using it.
