How does the ease of operation compare opening, lock, etc. I plan on using it everyday, I heard the black finish is and issue, but I still like it. Alright, which knife is better?

Do search and you will find more hits than you can imagine. Two of the most beloved knives in the universe. You cannot go wrong with either.

Also, for cleaning fish, do you feel the finish may end up in my dinner. I know one's supposed to throw out a scratched teflon pan

I EDC a BM 710 D2.

IMHO, the Axis lock on the BM is the true "state of the art" for non-automatic one handed opening knives. The lock is quite strong, and easily opens with a "flick of the wrist."

I would personally prefer the CPM D2 of the Spyderco, but I personally don't like, or trust the liner lock.

Both are good knives, but IMHO, the BM 710 wins hands down, when the locks are considered.

I would choose based on what you want to do with the knife.
first, it must be said that the Military has a very large handle, if you have small hands you might like the 710 more. If your hands are on the larger side, you'll love the Military.
Also, you mentioned cleaning fish. I suggest that the Military will serve that purpose better. The blade thins out quite nicely toward the tip, and the liner lock will be easier to clean out.
However, both knives could serve that purpose.
I don't think there's anything to worry about in the coating. I doubt the finish would come off cutting fish anyway. Cardboard yes, but softer stuff not so much.
The Axis lock can be more fun to use, and should have a longer lifespan.
The liner lock on the Military will do well for every day stuff, just don't treat it like a prybar.

I was just wondering about the decapitation of trout and smaller fish rather than filleting them. Cutting through the spine is much tougher than cardboard, trust me I cleaned a trout as big as my fingertips to my elbow with a dull ladybug last week. I'm amazed I didn't cut myself. Thank you for your advice!

wow thanks, sorry to bore you....

I would recommend the Military.

The 710 is one heck of a knife, of that there is no doubt.
But in my opinion, the Military simply cuts better.

Good luck,
Allen

I own both, and am glad that I do.

Of the 2, the CPMD2 Military is my newest folder. It has been my EDC for weeks now, which is unusual for me; the 710 had the same place for me when I first scored it. My 710 isn't retired, it just isn't in rotation right now as I [heart] my new Military.

I really like the opening hole of the Military vs. the thumb stud on the 710. However, the Axis lock beats out a liner lock hands down. I like the Military's flat grind over the 710's high saber grind, but the 710 is recurved which makes for some great slicing.

My 710 is in M2, I scored it shortly after BM discontinued their M2 folders.

Buy them both. :p

All 3 are good knives with dedicated fans. You'd do best by visiting a store where you can handle them all & find out which you prefer. All 3 are up to the task, different people will prefer each based on their own subjective criteria. That said, if you can snag a 710 in M2 steel, that's a good snag!

Both are the top of the line of their companies, and are classics IMO up there with the 110, at least in the arena of folders. I had a 710 in 154CM, and have a Military plain satin finish. With a heavy heart, I sold my 710. Blade was just too narrow for me. Lest anyone think I am harping on BM, I love their brand, but have gotten into Striders and Sebenzas now. I still have my Ritter Grip, and used the heck out of that on Saturday and Sunday. When BM makes the blade on the 710 a little wider and puts jimping on the spine of the blade, I will pick one up again. Even making the blade wider, ala the 705 to 707, I might pick one up.

I got the Military(plain black) for everyday pocket use and the ruckus(combo stainless)for crimes against fish.
Who knows maybe I'll just be a freak and run both. Thank you guys!

Christ man, if that 710 in M2 is still available get it! The M2 steel alone is worth the purchase! Add the 710 to the equation and you've got a cutting machine! Many here would give there left anything to score one for that very reason.
