So for Christmas i got a benchmade mini grip, and now the pivot is to the point where its either too loose with tons of blade or too tight (where i can't flick it closed) and its rock solid, has this happened to anyone else or did i get a lemon?

If it arrived without either issue, then it can be restored to that. Just make slow adjustments to the pivot until you hit the right balance of no lateral play, but still maintaining smooth motion. If you find it's slipping a lot on you, you can also use threadlocker (eg. Loctite Blue 242) or thread seal tape to hold the pivot screw in place.

What flarp said. - Also wanted to note that the "small adjustments" can literally be minute. Once you're almost there, just add a slight amount of pressure, you won't even be able to see the actual pivot move.

Take out the blade first off and clean and lightly polish the washer, remove all gunk. Re assemble and blue loctite the pivot at the perfect spot. That should fix it. I have noticed with all grips and mini grips. That if the washer build up gunk this will happen. A few seconds on the strop and the washers will be great.

I've had a few minis and every single one has had SOME side to side play in it. I don't mind it much, but others might.

I figure as long as it's not a crazy amount to the point where it becomes dangerous to use the knife, then there's nothing really to worry about.

However, I HAVE noticed something interesting with my mini ritter after putting aftermarket scales on it. The side to side was GREATLY reduced, almost as if the standoffs improved the "parallel-ness" of the liners and got rid of some of the room around the pivot:thumbup:

This. This. A million times this. BM lateral play issues are from inaccurate parts like standoffs, spacers, etc.. Now that's not to say the OP is experiencing this problem but it very well may be. SO many BM's I've had suffered from this, and have been fixed knowing this is the problem

I use a TINY drop of clear nail polish, I find it is easier to break loose if you need to make an adjustment. I have a full size Griptillian and am quite fond of it. It did take a bit of adjustment out of the box to get it just right, but now it locks up solid and still comes open easily.

Keep working with it and make tiny adjustments until you get it right. Mine has not had to be readjusted since either, it has stayed in the sweet spot.

i had a mini grip with the same problem. I even polished the washers and used nano oil but the blade play was still there. I just gave up and sold it, stick to better brands like spyderco :p

How does that work exactly?
He said its either too loose with tons of blade or too tight where I can't flick it closed. With my experience with benchmades, I tighten the pivot to where there is no play, then lube the pivot area and it usually will be able to flick close.

I assume you are talking about the Mini Grip with the original scales? If that's the case, I find the adjustment lies not only in the pivot screws but the scale screws also. Try adjusting all screws and play around with tension combinations; ie. losen one and tighten another and try to find a sweet spot. Good luck.

I like this I'm going to try it . I get the side play with most of my benchmade but don't mind it . I like the way they fly open .

Me too. I have to use locktite on all of them even if they don't have it yet cause they will develop some side blade play eventually. If I use loctite though I usually won't have blade play until a month or two of use then just have to reapply. I flip whatever one I have on me that day 100-500 times a day just cause it's almsot like a stress ball for me when not occupied with something. I think maybe that's why they develop blade play too cause I deploy them 1000 times more than I do my other knives. I don't mind a little side to side play once and awhile cause I LOVE THE AXIS LOCK. Up and down play I can't stand. I use loctite on almost all my knives period. I get blade play from knives made from other companies too.

Use some teflon tape on the pivot. Works great for me. Not as messy as loctite.
