Hey guys, got my mini griptilian in the mail today. It's a nice knife overall. I was starting to think it was going to be a piece of junk after reading the Benchmade quality control thread. The only two problems are the blade came quite dull, this is only a problem because I don't currently have a way of sharpening it, and when I shake the knife back and forth theres a rattling sound coming from it. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be like. Does your Mini Griptilian rattle when you shake it?

try tightening the pivot screw to help with the blade play, and as to the sharpness you may send it back to benchmade and have them resharpen it or you could do it yourself whether by system or stones, your choice

It's not blade play. It's just makes a rattling sound when the knifes closed and I shake it. I know I could send it back for resharpen but thats to much of a hassle. I'm new to the knife world so I haven't picked up anything for sharpening yet. Thats next on my list.

Get yourself a Sharpmaker. The rattling sound has been observed in some of those knives. Could be the lock or a stop pin, I cannot recall. It should be fine so long as it locks up tight.

Thanks for the feedback guys. There's just tiny bit of side to side movement when the blade is locked up. I already played with the pivot screw. I need to get some loctite for it. Which brings up another question. If I take the pivot screw out will the blade come off?
I'm already planning on getting a sharpmaker, Thanks Revdevil.

I recently bought two minis, and both rattle when shaken. I wouldn't worry about it though, I haven't had any issues and I use both every other day (they're my work knives).

Mine both have a teeny tiny bit of play as well, I wouldn't worry about - but then again I have little interest in taking either one apart.

Edit: I'm 99% sure the pivot pin is the only thing locking the blade in.

Edit edit: sandpaper and a mouse pad is pretty cheap way to sharpen as well...maybe both? :)

It's odd, I have a grip and my wife has a mini, no rattling in either, no blade play, and both came out of the box scalpel sharp. Guess we were lucky.

Just send it back to benchmade, they will take care of you.

If you want sharp out of the box, buy a spyderco.

my mini also rattles...

i found that it is the stop pin. doesnt affect the integrity of the knife though.

can it push cut paper?

Seems like if you ask the majority here about Benchmades out of the box, you would be lucky if one could "push cut" a marshmallow...:D

Keeping things on-topic here, I have both the grip and the mini, neither of them rattles, and both were reasonable sharp out of the box. I am curious about my Grip tho, when I close it, about an inch before the blade fully recesses into the handle, there's a bit of resistance. I don't get that with my mini, just the full sized Grip. Has anyone had any experience with that? Thanks!

What about a drop of oil in the axis lock? I guess that should fix it.

Probably. Sometimes you'll be left out in the cold with BM unwilling to help.

I doubt it. I'm no fanboy but they have good customer service.
Edit: I read a little about youre xperience, seems weird that they would nto help.

Before I even saw all the threads about Benchmade QC I'd purchased 11 knives. Grips and mini Grips included. I've not had a single issue with any of them. No blade play. There is some rattle when the blade is closed but no sound at all when shaken if the blade is open.

I just ordered another Mini in the M390 steel. I'm not worried at all that it won't be a good knife.

The rattling doesn't bother me. I was just making sure there isn't something wrong with it.
The dullness of the knife bugs me more. The $10 Spyderco Grasshopper I bought came much sharper.

The rattling is the stop pin. Not much to do about it. Some use Loc-Tite or similar means but that seals the pin in one position and it's meant to rotate to deal with wear from the back of the tang.

The resistance should disappear/ease up after a bunch of cycles. Adjusting the pivot most likely won't solve the problem.

Sorry to read your knife arrived less than sharp. Never been a better time for the purchase of a sharpening tool like a SharpMaker, or if you're serious on maintenance, an Edge Pro.

Like the poster above, I've been around Benchmades for a long while and have very few problems to report in all that time.

I do believe there's a problem with QC right now and hope, after a couple of very sketchy LE runs hope they're (BKC) talking about it so that gets fixed. We just had a LE 805 TSEK run take place, and it was a fiasco.

SO - enjoy using your Grip. If you can't deal with the issues you're having either return it from where it came, or send it up...Benchmade's warranty service is tops in my book.
