Trying to decide between the two. D2 is ten bucks more. I know they are both good steels, and I don't have any knives in d2.

I had an activator in d2 and fixed and mini grips in 154, and i kept the 154. The d2 was a great blade too, just a little tougher to maintain in the field. It cut and held an edge well, but their 154 is a better balance of performance vs maintenance for me.

I love benchmades d2, keeps a wicked edge and it's corrosion resistance has been very good thus far.

Are you going the BM factory customization route?

As for your question, I really can't help much as I don't have a D2 knife yet, I got my mini-grip a couple weeks ago (BM555, 154CM) and immedentally fell in love with it, so much so that within days I ordered a custom[full size] 551 in D2 but it won't be here for a few more weeks, I would have ordered the S30V for performance:maintence but I own other S30V knives, the mini-grip in 154 is and the 551 in D2 will be the only knives I have in those steels.

No I'm not going the custom route. A store by me has them in stock, as well as the full size in d2.

What's they're prices? How much higher are the S30V's priced?

Which ever one you get will be a great knife. I find sharpening as much a hobbie as collecting and I like having different steels is the reasoning behind ordering a D2 but from what I know of steel and what I've read about D2 the 154CM option will probabily be a better blade [over D2] for 90% of users.

S30v isn't available at any stores near me, plus I already have two knives in that steel. D2 is $99, 154 $89.

I've got one in 154CM as an EDC and it's great. Chips occasionally when I ding it against something, but it sharpens out. (Annoying to sharpen out though...) My preference goes to 154CM. (Although S30V > 154 CM in my experience)

I would carry D2.. but being in Texas and getting a lot of heat with good amount of humidity, I tend to avoid carrying tool steels (D2). Very durable steel though, just keep it's attributes in mind!

Does benchmade use CPM D2, the powder metallurgy version? Or is it the standard D2?
The only BM I have in D2 is my model 51. Can't carry it though.

Well I'm in Illinois Chicago area everything's higher priced. That's why I usually order online but I haven't been able to find the d2 model anywhere but locally. I also get to figure in 10% tax lucky me.

I have a Mini Griptilian in D2, and it works great. Sharpens easily enough, stays sharp awhile, and the corrosion resistance isn't as bad as some say. I've used it in the military in the field weeks at a time, in the rain, and never had a problem.

I would take Caldwelr's advice. He has used it in somewhat extreme environments.

CPM D2 takes a great edge and holds it much longer than 154cm. D2 is harder to sharpen, however. It's a trade-off.
I'd take D2 without hesitation.

154cm is amazing and easily maintained in short time with a strop. With out a doubt it has the best polished edge of all my knives.
