Subject knife purchased 3 years ago. Knife is cleaned and oiled twice per week, carried daily. ATS 34 blade has developed small odd shaped pits which do not appear to be rust. Looks like small carbon deposits in steel is the cause. Any input would be welcomed.

Try WD-40 or Tri Flow or your regular oil. Let it soak in for a little bit (2 min) and then rub it vigorously with a rag. If it isn't going away, then try moving on Flitz polish or some other light oxidation removers.

Hope that helps, take care.
