Benchmade Model 923S-01 BLK Taurus - What to Do?

Let's say a guy won a Benchmade Model 923S-1 BLK Taurus at a big pistol match recently. Let's go on to say it's serialized #1 (of 1000).

Should the guy tuck it away for posterity, or use the heck out of it because it's a cool knife?

Retail price at the Benchmade web site is $200. Since it's #1, does that make any difference, or is it (as usual) it's only worth what someone will pay for it?

1 of 1000 usually means that the knives are not serial numbered. It means this is one knife of the 1000 made.
If it said 1/1000, then you might be a lucky guy.
I made the same mistake once, I think everyone does.

A-hah!

I'm glad I asked. The distinction would have been lost on me.

What if the etching were something in between the two, such as:

#1 of 1000 made.

That would imply it was serialized at #1, correct?

Thanks!

Following your link, I found "The knife will have an initial production run of 1,000 each and each blade will be numbered 1 of 1000 and will indicate first production." (My emphasis.)

Retail Price: $200.00 is a bit more than street price. Similar models seem to be going for around $170. Pricey enough, but I'd say it's worth it.

Use the heck out of it because it's a cool knife! :D

i have several BM pre-pro and 1st pro runs and they are all individually serialised (ie 088/500 or 207/1000) so not all say just "1-1000".

doesnt make them worth anything more than a small premium though, and only then to certain collectors. even if it was serail # 1 of 1000 knives i stiill dont think it would be worth that much of a premium, certainly wouldnt double the MSRP or anything like that, but #1 would be cool to have if ya liked that model/etc..

if ya like it use it.

Rhino-

I like those two-bladed SwitchBack Benchmade models. That little blade is handy (great for cutting lime slices to put in your Corona). Not many folks are aware that they are available (can't get past the Model 550 Griptilians, hee hee!).

I would do whatever you feel like doing with it. I don't think it will ever be sold at a Christies auction. Unless the knife is #1 of something I don't think it is special. If there is a limited run of ten knives and they are really cool then it probably won't matter what number it is.

I have one that is a California Raisen Purple Grape color Model 921. I have carried it off and on and the color coating seems to hold up well. I usually don't just jam a knife in my pocket with car keys, coins, etc. but keep it one of those little inexpensive (actually cheap) nylon velco locking cases. Doesn't attract attention. Still easy to access. Doesn't get nicked and scratched. I can usually find a cheap knife with a nylon sheath for less than I can buy the sheath through a knife supply house.

If it is not your cup of tea go to the Benchmade forum and sell it (or PM me).

I was just gonna pipe up an say, this aswell.
Benchmade does not number thier knives like Kershaw or others.

You got a special unit imho, its the first of the run. :D

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'll probably keep it since I won it at a match and I don't win stuff very often, even though it was by drawing and not order of finish! :D

If it had a non-serrated edge, it would be tough for me to not jam it in my pocket and use the heck out of it! I still might ...

Imo, thats a nice knife, i wasn't too familiar with it prior to this post, but now i am drooling :D

I would prob carry it a bit, even though it may not see any real serious usage though.

That particular knife is not numbered the way benchmade usually numbers them, ie 5 of 500, 55 of 500 ,155 of 500, etc. They are all numbered 1 of 1000, i am very knowledgable of all things benchmade trust me. I actually have a 923 prototype for which i paid 125 bucks, its a real nice knife but i dont use it.

That's not *quite* true.

They don't usually serialize the blades like Spyderco or Kershaw, but the number is often on the box. I just traded one of those "Californicated Raisin Purple" 921's to a fellow BFer a few days ago, and the box was clearly markered, "#11 of 50".

And they *do* serialize blade occasionally. One of my EDC rotation is a limited 921 with D2 blade and pewter anodizing, and the etch on the blade reads "46 of 50".

(Yes, I actually EDC a 1 of 50. I wasn't planning to when I got it, but it's just so damn GOOD a knife, especially for office EDC, I couldn't just leave it in the safe. I've dropped it once, so there's a little dent in the tip at the rear, but the anodizing is a lot tougher than I expected: not a scratch yet. And tho I had to sharpen the main blade out of the box, it hasn't needed sharpening since, after about a year of occasional EDC. Love that D2!)

Two of my favorite EDCs are a Benchmade 941D2CF that was originally 88 of 500 until someone cut a live extension cord with it and arced a big chunk out of the blade. Benchmade was kind enough to replace the blade at no charge, but it lost it's unique serail #. The other is a 941Ti-01 which is also uniquely serialized. They're both special, but they're too good to leave in the safe.

I say use it!

never said all were numbered the same.

if its 1-1000 and all are numbered 1-1000 its not worth any more than a std model.

i actually have probably 5 BM protos right now and have had 4-5 others during the yrs & also know a thing/2 about BM's esp protos and pre-pros/etc.

Benchmade keeps #1 (and #2 I think) of all their serialed knives.

Oops, thanks for the correction BMNut, i could have sworn when i read this thread along the way it was a LE numbered such an such, which every BM i have seen is numbered that way, thanks.

Yeah i see the error of my ways now, and you have or had one that was a LE of sorts, the raisin one, without matching numbers on the blade, well crikey, haven't seen that prior aswell, thanks for the heads up.

I think bro, they were correcting me,not your post.

Sorry Rhino, for causing more confusion, i hope these guys cleared it up for you.
