Im thinking about buying a lonewolf mountainside drop point and i wasnt sure about the steel. How is n680 and what are its properties. Not chemical properties but edge retention and so forth compared to say buck's 420hc.
I use one often to skin/gut catfish. Takes a fine edge, has very good edge retention while being easy to sharpen/touch up, and it's highly corrosion resistant. It's one of my favorite knives for working with fish and game. I've never used Buck's 420HC so I can't make the comparison.
Welcome to Bladeforums. N680 is an excellent steel all around, notable for being extremely corrosion resistant. It'll hold an edge better than Buck's 420HC. Here's a good thread on the relative edge holding properties of various blade steels. Enjoy.
I haven't been impressed with its edge holding. Buck's 420hc holds a razor sharp edge longer in my experience and tskes a sharper edge. The only kinds of edges I could get out of it were very toothless edges that didn't cut soft material that well. It seems to perform a lot like 440 c from my experience.
